The rnilroads of NebraBkn seem to
havo given up the idea of holding off the
conventions and senatorial endorse
ments but no one can safely charge
them with keeping their eyes off the
gun tho state legislature
The Tribune has been asked already
what tho policy of the delegates to the
several conventions from Red- Willow
county will be in view of the anti pass
resolution passed by tho late county con
vention We cannot authoritatively
answer the question but we note that
tho resolution itself condemns unresorv
edly every effort made to make of that
doctrine a farce and a sham and we
cannot now make up our mind to think
that such patriotic men as constitute
our state delegation will do anything to
embarrass tho Republicans of Red Wil
low county after such a straight and
strong pronouncement on that question
There is only one thing for them to do
pay their fares

Republican County Convention
The Republicans of Red Willow coun
ty met in convention in McCook last
Saturday and named candidates for
office selected delegates to the several
conventions resolved selected county
committee and several other matters
It was in some aspects one of the most
remarkable conventions in tho history
of Red Willow county
At the morning session J E Kelley
was made chairman and J E Ryan
secretary of the convention Commit
tees on resolutions and credentials were
appointed and the convention adjourn
ed until 130 in tho afternoon
Promptly at the time adjourned to
the convention took up its work The
first nomination made was that of coun
ty attorney Preston E Reeder of Mc
Cook and Samuel R Smith of Indianola
were candidates The first ballot gavo
Reeder 82 and Smith 44 Mr Reeder
acknowledged the honor in a brief
speech
Phillip Gliem of Danbury was renom
inated by acclamation and made a
clever square deal Rooseveltian
speech of acknowledgement
Samuel Premer was made the nominee
for commissioner in the second district
in the same manner
The following named delegates were
named on a committee to select the
state congressional and senatorial de
legationsbeing one from each repre
sented precinct in the county W H

Congressman G W Norris was court
eously civen permission to name the
congressional delegation but preferred
to have it named in the usual manner
He wanted to take the whole convention
with him if he could
It was decided to invite Congressman
G W Norris and Attorney General
Brown to address the meeting during
the absence of the nominating commit
tee
Congressman Norris responded with a
vigorous presentation of the accomplish
ments of the late congress congratulat
ing the Republican party and the people
of the nation upon the many good and
great and useful things secured in that
session against immense opposition
The attorney general made a ten
stroke in his opening tribute to the con
gressman and then proceeded to warm
up the Burlington and Union Pacific
railroads in a manner entirely new to a
McCook audience for their tax shirking
and meddling in the politics of the
state Taking into account the setting
it was the most humorous thing the
writer has seen and heard in several
moons But it brought the endorse
ment
The following resolutions were then
reported by Chairman Barnett who
however gave Charles Skalla credit for
the almost entire effort They are the
warmest bunch of resolutions ever
adopted by a Republican convention in
Red Willow county Here they are
RESOLUTIONS
The Republicans of Red Willow coun
ty meet again in convention to reaffirm
their staunch allegiance to the princi
ples which have brought peace and pros
perity to this great land of ours and
have prompted in a high degree the con
tentment and happiness of the people
We take pride in following the in
trepid leader of our party Theodore
Roosevelt and we commend his un
wavering loyalty to our party principles
his patriotic zeal in the discharge of
of public duty his popular policy of the
square deal his watchful and unrelent
ing care of the interests of the whole
people and his firm stand for equality
among men in all matters be they pol
irnnl pnTnTriftrpal or social His
I WW
splendid character is a bulwark of
strength to his party and a guaranty to
all people of a faithful impartial and
forceful administration of the executive
affairs of the nation
We commend the loyal support given
the President by all the Nebraska mem
bers of both house and congress
Especially do we commend the record
of Hon George W Norris who has well
and faithfully served the people of the
Fifth Congressional district and is a
forceful worker for the welfare of his
constituents We instruct our delegates
to the congressional convention to ex
press the confidence in him reposed by
the republicans of Red Willow county
by their cordial and unanimous support
of him in the convention
We recommend all the republican
state officials for the clean and conscien
tious administration they have given our
state
We demand that the anti pass doc
trine as enunciated by our party to be
made a settled policy to be faithfully
observed by ourcandidates and officials
and we condemn unreservedly every
effort made to make of that doctrine a
farce and a sham
In the most emphatic manner do we
express our approval of the course taken
by our state officials to compel the Bur
lington and Union Pacific railroad com
panies to pay the taxes justly assessed
against them and we condemn the action
of the railroads in attempting to dodge
taxation as a display of corporate greed
and unfairness
wjgg3aaMBgggawyMaSStEi
We favor an elective railway commis
sion charged with the important duty
of equalizing railroad tariffs and endow
ed with power to punish all forms of re
bates and private graft and we insist
that the members of such commission
be men of known convictions who will
discharge their duties with equality
thoroughness and fearlessness
Wo realize that the coming state con
vention is to be one of great importance
It has some momentous duties to per
form It is essential to the welfare of
our party that the convention of 1906
align itself fairly and squarely with the
issues which have for their leader tho
President himself and for their followers
the great mass of the American people
That such results may be assured it is
necessary that the delegates to that
convention be men of right and open
convictions men that will vote tho will
of the people in the selection of party
candidates and -the adoption of platform
planks To the end that Red Willow
county will be found in warm and open
sympathy with those questions we
pledge our delegates to the support of
candidates for state officers who with
their characters their principles and
their associations commend themselves
as worthy of our confidence and trust
The nominating committee then re
ported and the following delegations
were announced

On a call of the precincts it was de
cided to express preference for United
States senator 73 voting for to 48
against the proposition The proposi
tion was warmly opposed by A Barnett
of McCook and as warmly espoused by
S R Smith of Indianola The result
shows that the farmers were in favor
and the city fellows and politicans for
the most part opposed

vention on that point

Big Tim as he is known In New

There isnt much about the sporting

GENERAL EDWARD
S I5RAGG
As commander of
the Iron Brigade
he won a record as
a soldier seldom
equaled It was at
the second Bull Run
that the Stonewall
Brigade of the
Confederate army
and the Iron Bri
gade of the Fed
eral army grappled
in a deatli strug
gle When the sol
diers had exhaust
ed their ammuni
tion they clubbed their guns and when
these were broken they fought with
appalling savagery with the stones of
that historic railroad cut for missiles
It was at once a charge and a melee
In that battle and in the other engage
ments in which it participated during
the remainder of the war the Iron
Brigade lost more men in killed and
wounded than any similar command
of the whole Federal army
It was in 18S4 at the convention
which first nominated G rover Cleve
land for the presidency that General
Bragg coined the phrase that has been
so often quoted since Bourke Cock
ran and Thomas F Grady represent
ing Tammany Hall had made a fierce
onslaught upon Mr Cleveland then
governor of New York and in replying
to it General Bragg in an impassioned
speech declared
We love him gentlemen and re
spect him not only for himself for his
character his integrity his judgment
and Iron will but we love him for the
enemies he has made
When Attorney General Moody re
turned from Chicago where he wor
ried hard to put the beef trust officials
in jail he went to his residence to take
a short rest A visitor called to see
Mr Moody but met an obstacle in the
person of a negro butler who said

the railway accident near Salisbury

were the chief topic of her conversa

Twelfth

Ah said Colonel McClellan
Yes she continued hes going to

there ought to be a gentleman in con
