Death of a Public Spirited Citizen
The death of George Berry has effect
ed McCook hearts as has few deaths
since McCook has had a being and suf
fered the approach and unstayable de
struction of the grim monster Death
The following obituary and tribute is
from the pen of one better able to pay
the willing tribute of respect than the
publisher and we reproduce it in full
George B Berry was born in Macon
county Illinois May 2nd 1858 His
departure from this life occurred at
1245 this morning July 17tb 1906at
the age of 47 years2 months and 15 day
At the age of two years hjs parents
moved to Cass county 111 and located
near Virginia At the age of ten years
his parents moved into the village
just mentioned where George attended
public school until he was eighteen
years old wnen he entered the post
office as assistant postmaster of his own
fqwb About a year later he went
Chicago and was employed in the whole
sale book store of M A Maxwell Co
In 1877 be came west and located in
McCook and engaged in the book and
stationery business selling out in 1890
to our brother the late Dr S L Green
and returning to Chicago again entered
theemploy of Maxwell Co remaining
with thein a number of years Later he
returned to McCook and entering the
drug business with L W McConnell
About four years ago he sold his interest
to Mr McConnell and accepted the pos
ition of deputy in the county clerks
office of this county which position he
held at the time of his death
For some time our brothers health
has been failing his unsteady steps we
all noticed A recent tripto Omaha to
consul a specialist regarding his health
was kept for a time from relatives and
friends but the last straw that broke
down the already over worked brother
was his over exertion a couple weeks
ago in the heated sun for the comfort
and lightening the burdens of others
Mr Berry has been confined to his
bed since the night of the fourth of this
month his condition becoming critical
and it seemed like hoping against hope
for him to recoverAH that skillscience
love and prayers could do was done but
of no avail and some days ago Mr
Berry realized that his hours were num
bered and attended to his business in
terests and Sunday made arrangements
for his funeral services and the place of
burial
The large assembly of friends at this
very busy time tells with what respect
esteem he was held by all George
Berry was an honest honorable and
upright man The county loses a trust
worthy officer the city a useful citizen
the family a beloved brother
The Masters chair is vacant
Where George did once preside
But the love we had for this brother
In our hearts doth still abide
The gavel lies there silent
And beside it the compass and square
But he who once used them
We commend to a Fathers care
The level and plumb of uprightness
And the sprig of acacia so green
Brightens a hope that burns in our bosom
Of a life beyond that which now intervene
His column is fallen and broken
But the mortar he spread is still here
And we trust in the Lion of Judah
Who cometh and casteth out fear
Though the silver cord ho loased
And broken be the golden bowl
Our trust weve placed in God
Who lias taken the immortal soul
My brothers were erecting a building
Each stone should be laid with care
That when wo are called from our labor
We may have a buildinga temple up there
My brtehren he our presiding master
who provided for so many funeral ser
vices is now the subject of this solemn
occasion He who always was first with
his service in time of sickness and death
is now the victim of the enemy of man
kind He who bore the flowers in days
so soon gone is now the recipient of the
token we bring He who so often has
laid the white apron and flvergreen on
the coffin of a fallen brother now in like
manner receives these symbols from our
hands He who onlyJast Easter in this
church read the roll of the fallen
knights is now with that white plumed
company He but two weeks ago in
company with his brethors walked down
yonder aisle today we follow his body
and coffin down that same aisle
Our brother was serving his 2nd term
as Master of McCook Lodge of M M
He was a member of the Chapter and
Commandery and of the Shrine in
Lincoln
George has told me many times
that he loved these verses for a service
of this kind they being the ones that
were recited at the funeral of his brother

his loss three sisters in Illinois one in

L W McConnell of this city and his
only surviving brother Rev HHBerry
vHis remains will depart tomorrow
morning- on tram No 12 for Virginia
Illinois to rest beside the remains of his
father mother brother Charlie and sis-

Both are most estimable young people
The doctor is an alumnus of Chicago
university and of Rush medical college

A Slight Fire Last Friday
A fire in a box car in rear of Phillip
Blatts stable last Friday afternoon
caused an alarm and a run for the de
partment In a few minutes after water
was thrown the fire was under control
The damage was slight The box car

also slight
