Tragedy at Herndon
Another tragedy was added to the his
tory of Rawlins County last Wednesday
September 20th when Charles R Stev
enson a druggist at Herndon shot and
almost instantly killed John Tutt a
negro whose homo was in Decatur
county The shooting occurred at Stev
ensons place of business about six
oclock in the evening
The circumstances of the alfair so far
as we are able to learn from those who
attended the coroners inquest are to
the effect that Tutt who was running a
threshing machine a few miles oast of
town came in to Herndon that day and
all the witnesses agreed that he had
been drinking but only one or two stat
ed that he was intoxicated to any con
siderable extent In the afternoon Tutt
went to Stevensons drugstore and want
ed to buy a half pint of whiskey and
Stevenson refused to sell it to him He
declared his intention of getting it any
way and followed Stevenson into the
drugstore After some words had pass
ed during which Stevenson threatened
Tutt with a revolver the negro left the
store but came back the second time
and again demanded whiskey which
was again refused by Stevenson
Stevensons story is to the effect that
the negro attempted to grasp him by
the throat while some of the witnesses
state that Tutt only pushed him back
by the shoulder Stevenson reached
for his revolver which he had left lying
on one of the show cases and fired the
fatal shot the bullet going almost di
rectly through Tutts heart He walked
out of the store and said to Henry Mey
ers who was on the side walk Meyers
Im hurt walked about twerty feet to
the front of Slocums store and fell to
the side walk dead
County Attorney Bye and Sheriff
Chessmore were summoned to the scene
the tragedy and an inquest was held of
which lasted to nearly noon Thursday
The coroners jury which was composed
of F H Drath F L Schwab Dan
Yager R A Slocum John Sheley and
S C Allen returned the following ver
dict
The said jurors upon their oaths do
say that the said John Tutt came to his
death on the evening of September 20th
1905 in Herndon Rawlins county from
a gun shot wound said gun being then
and there loaded with powder leaden
ball and cap and being held in the hands
of one Charles R Stevenson and the
said shooting and killing of said John
Tutt by said Charles R Stevenson was
done with felonious intent of him the
said Charles R Stevenson
Stevenson was brought to Atwood
yesterday and is now in the custody of
the sheriff He has employed Fred
Robertson the well known Atwood law
yer to defend him
Tutt was about 25 or 26 years old and
has lived in the northwest part of De
catur county for many years His father
who was one of the early settlers of De
catur county moved to Oklahoma a few
years ago Atwood Pariot

Association Meeting1
The Republican Valley Association of
Congregational churches met for its
twenty fifth meeting with the church at
Indianola on September 25th and 26th
A large number of delegates and pastors
were present who enjoyed the open
hearted hospitality of the Indianola peo
sle and discussed questions of vital in
terest to Christianity and the church
The general topic of the 3ssion was
The Holy Spirit The Office of the
Holy Spirit His Present Mission In
the Church were ably discussed by
Rev G T Noyce of Trenton and Rev
Percy Ratzell of Cafnbridge while Rev
G II Rice of Red Cloud discussed
The Supreme Need of the Churches
which ho defined to be a baptism of the
Holy Spirit
As is always the case in these meet
ings the ladies hour was the most alive
and interesting of the whole session
Those who slept peacefully during the
other addresses listened eagerly while
the women told of their works in home
and foreign missions The best single
addresses of the association were those
given by Dr H C Herring of Omaha
On Tuesday afternoon he discussed
The Present Outlook for Evangel
ism By a careful statement of actual
conditions in our own county he showed
that there were hopeful signs in our
churches of a new religious lifo and an
increasing success in the gaining of con
verts to Christ and His gospel
In the evening Dr Herring discussed
Jesus Teaching About the Family
Under theFour Heads Marriage Child
hood Divorce and Home In clear
and striking sentences he held i p the
teachings of Jesus and contrasted them
with the present tendencies of the day
Rev II Bross superintendent of Home
Missions showed how the time has
come when Nebraska must cut loose
from New England and support her own
home missionary work To this end he
explained how each church has been
allotted a definite sum of money to raise
Closely related to this was the discuss
ion of Benevolence in our churches
by Rev T O Douglass of Franklin
The consideration of this subject
brought out the unanimous and earnest
belief that each church should give sys
tematically to all the societies which
are carrying on the work of the Congre
gational churches at large It was de
cided to hold the next meeting of the
association at Red Cloud in April of
next year

Successful County Fair
Today Red Willow county closed one
of her most successful fairs of late years
at Indianola Wednesday Thursday
and Friday were marked by good at
tendance especially the two last dayB of
the meeting when as usual McCook
turned out generously of her citizens to
swell the gate receipts
The meeting was held in the old fair
grounds west of Indianola and the
grounds and buildings had been placed
in good repair for the event
There was a fairly good exhibit of
grains corn and grasses fruits and veg
etables with a sprinkling of exhibits in
the mechanical arts fine arts etc
In the stock department there was a
good showing as to quality but the
quantity was light
Rogers herefords
The chief attraction in the line of
live stock was the exhibit of White
Faces from Shadeland stock farm just
east of McCook Mr Rogers having in
the stalls some choice Herefords ani
mals that can win ribbons in any ring
in America This action of Mr Rogers
was appreciated alike by the manage
ment and by all lovers of fine stock It
is needless to add that nothing in the
form of ribbons escaped them in their
class
Gerald Wilcox had some fine hogs on
the grounds
Joe Harrison some splendid polled
Angus cattle
There were a few good horses but not
a representative lot of the many fine an
imals to be seen in Red Willow county
The races were a feature and attract
ed much of the crowd present on the
closing days of the meeting These were
of fair interest but no particularly fast
time was recorded
All in all the fair was successful
enough to show the large possibilities of
Red Willow county in that line should a
united and energetic effort be made to
that end supported by sufficient funds
We congratulate the management

Amateurish Effort at Burglary
An amateurish effort was made Tues
day night presumably I y some boys to
burglarize the Waite hardware store
A window in the implement shed in the
rear of the store was broken out and a
panel was cut out of the door leading
from the rearmost shed to the shed im
mediately adjoining the brick store
proper An effort was made to cut out
one of the lower panels of the door
leading into the rear of the store A large
penknife was evidently used and when
the knife got through tne wood and
came in contact with the steel sheeting
on the inside of the door the attempt
was given up Evidently nothing was
disturbed in either of the sheds

A Narrow Escape From Injury
W J Predmore son of George W
had a close call from serious injury on
Thursday of this week He was engag

from a sitting position his right arm
came in touch with the end of a shaft
The fact that he pulled away from the
shaft with all his strength and that both
his over and under shirts were ripped
off his arm perhaps alone saved him
from serious injury
