The Passlrfg Moffat - Advertised Letters
Denvkk Feb17 The great Moffat The following letters were advertised
by the McCook postoHiceFeb20 1905
railroad is no longer an independent
into being has sold his project to E Har
riman for his Union Pacific system after
nearly four years of constant battle with
Tom Liwsons system
Mofiat is back in Denver and ready to
turn the property over to Harrinian
although it is said no perceptible change
in tho conduct of afLiiis will bo noted
for some time to come Moirat Syl T
Smith W F Jones and C J Uughes
will continue their idenity with the road
until certain matters pertaining to leg
islation are disposed of and one by one
the present board of directors will fade
away until all Harrinian peoplo are in
control Even then Moffat will have a
voice in tho management of tho property
as a stockholder as in payment for tho
road he has agreed to accept stock and
bonds which ilariiman is to issue
Just what Harrinian is to pay for the
property is witheld fiom tho public for
tho pieseut but it is known he shaded
the figure at which the option was se
cured considerably m When Harrinian
secured the option which expired Jan
31 he agreed to pay all the road has cost
to date with G per cent interest added
He failed to execute his option however
when it came due and word was sent
out from New York that the deal was oil
Later Harrinian took up negotiations
again and closed the transaction at a big
saving to himself
He had heard that Moffat needed the
money and took advantage of the j
tion I
Furthermore it is stated that Harri
nian would not buy until he had con
sulted fully on tho proposition with
Gould and Rockefeller An impresson
had gone abroad that Gould wanted the
roadandjllarriman hesited before antag
ouizing so powerful a rival Some
people even go so far as to declarethat
Gould will get a good block of Moffat
road stock that he will be represented
on the directorate and in a short time
will acquire control of tho Denver City
Tiamway and the Denver Union Water
company In securing the Tramway
Gould will be protecting his Denver dc
Rio Grande by precluding any pos iblity
of a free delivery of coal within tho city
limits
When Moffat nrst proponed the Den
ver Northwestern Pacific wiseacres
declared that the Wall street system
would never let him complete it and
such has proved to bo the case He
tried to keep his lino independent as it
could thus bo of most benefit to Denver
and to Colorado but after more than
three years of continued maneuvering he
was forced to quit
Tho road has an authoiized bond is
sue of 22 30000 and time and time again
Moffat thought ho had his securities
floated but in each instance just as the
underwriting syndicate was about to
begin work somebody stepped in and the
transaction collapsed
Had Moffat been able to float his bonds
he would cortainh have built the
road from Denver to Salt Lake as an
independent line Now the road may
never reach tho Mormon inctioplis Har
rinian proposes to stop it at Steamboat
Springs for the pieont and then build
noith through the llahn peak country
and reach tho Union Pacific at Rawlins
or Fort Steele
