Her ricks recent novel The Common Lot has just been finished in the Atlantic It is a story of a Chicago life by a Chi cago author and for these reasons has more than the usual interest for west erners The story while possessing more merit than the average modern novel is not all that one wishes it wore The book is by no means badly written and one objects rather to the romantic glow the author has thrown over his characters than to the manner of the presentation of his facts Perhaps however the majority of readers prefer the sacrifice of artistic effect to a happy ending The hero of Mr Ilerricks story is an architect a man whose uncle had gained his fortune in business The nephew had been given an opportunity to qualify himself for his profession He expected to bo the principal beneficiary under his uncles will but the old man believing he had done his duty by his nephew when he provided him with an education left the bulk of his immense estate to endow a school for working mens sons The young man was keen ly disappointed but did the only thing left for him to do opened an office and entered energetically upon the practice of his profession Soon after he mar ried one who would have been an ideal wife for a worthier man but unfortun ately Jackson nart the hero of the storydid not sustain this character Business did not come in sufficient quantity to furnish the money neces sary to satisfy Harts extravagant tastes and to secure the means to live the life ho wished to lead he resorted to dishon orable practices His wife disapproved of his course and finally left him The architect struggled along until one night a large apartment house that had been constructed according to plans of his own burned and seventeen of the in mates lost their lives The fault was largely his as he had been criminally guilty in making changes in the plans so that they violated the building ordin ances The catastrophe brought him to a realization of the futility of the life he was leading lie became reconciled to his wife who persuaded him to appear before the coroners jury and make a full disclosure of the facts His busi ness was ruined as a result and he was compelled to close his office and seek employment which he found without difficulty The moral tone of the book is good The lesson it teaches is wholesome The story is well told and will hold the at tention of the reader The only thing of which the reader can complain is the failure of the author to take advantage of his opportunities for artistic effect Suicide Prevented The startling announcement that a preventive of suicide had been discover ed will inteiest many A run down sys tem or despondency invariably precede suicide and some has been found that will prevent that condition which makes suicide likely At the first thought of self destruction take Electric Bitters It being a great tonic and nervine will strengthen the nerves and build up the system Its also a great stomach liver and kidney
