Congressman Nokkis has secured a
pension for Mrs Sarah Charter of Hast
ings whose case had been pending for
over 7 years and whose claim had been
repeatedly rejected The ground for re
jection was that her husband had been
previously married and that his first wife
was not dead at the time of the second
marriage This presumption was based
upon the assertion of Mr Charter and
there was no record that he had been
married to a former wife The Pension
Bureau rejected the claim on the theory
that the second marriage was invalid
Mr Norris in his judicial experience
had met the same proposition and he
believed the decision to be erroneous
He had the case reopened and then ap
pealed to the law department for an
opinion He secured a favorable ruling
upon tho point involved and the pen
sion has been granted accordingly The
back pension which will be paid to Mrs
Charter amounts to nearly 700 Mrs
Charter had given up all hopes of hav

Consumption
Salt pork is a famous old
fashioned remedy for con
sumption Eat plenty of
pork was the advice to the
consumptive 50 and 100
years ago
Salt pork is good if a man
can stomach it The idea
behind it is that fat is the
food the consumptive needs
most
ScottsEmulsionis the mod
ern method of feeding fat to
the consumptive Pork is too
rough for sensitive stomachs
Scotts Emulsion is the most
refined of fats especially
prepared for easy digestion
Feeding him fat in this
way which is often the only
nvay is half the battle but
Scotts Emulsion does more
than that There is some
thing about the combination
of cod liver oil and hypophos
phites in Scotts Emulsion
that puts new life into the
weak parts and has a special
action on the diseased lungs

PUBLIC FREE LIBRARY NOTES
It is customary for merchants at tho
end of each year to take an invoice of
the stock on hand and compute the prof
it or loss on the business done So it is
proper for us on this first day of the
year to glance hurriedly as we must
needs do in the limited space allotted to
us at the literary output of the twelve
month that is gone and to estimate our
gain for a curious feature of this liter
ary industry is that no matter how hard
the times no matter how large or how
small the production of books has been
no matter how industrious or how indo
lent the workmen have been there must
be some profit There can be no loss
Of first interest to lis is Mr Spear
mans The Daughter of a Magnate Al
though this book has been on the mar
ket less than ten weeks it is already in
its tenth edition It and John Foxs
-Little Shepherd of Kingdom Come are
today the best selling books in Chicago
Because it appeared so late in the season
it may perhaps properly beclassedwith
next years books among which it is safe
to say it will rank with those that shall
achieve huge success
Lady Roses Daughter is credited with
being the most successful novel of this
year It has attained popularity not
through merit but because of the repu
tation of its author and the mediocrity
of its competitors It is not even worthy
of its author who in David Grieve one
of her earlier works gave to the world
at least in the opinion of one humble
reader a story that outclasses everything
she has done since Lady Roses Daugh
ter was widely heralded but was disap
pointing Few writers have had a great
er opportunity than had Mrs Ward
The veriest tyro could not have more
miserably failed
Henry James has published The Em
bassadors Henry James writes for the
few His books are rhetorical puzzles
the principal source of pleasure deriv
able from their perusal being the solu
tion of his sentences He is always at
least in later years extremely stupid
He is called a realist If his characters
are taken from nature he has had the
misfortune to associate with some of the
dullest members of the human family
One cannot conceive of real men and
women saying the things that Henry
James people say And a peculiarity to
be noted in regard to his people is that
they confine their energies to talking
They seem not to be able to find any
possible excuse for doing anything It
may be hearsay to say so but truth
compels the admission that George Elliott-is
not always entertaining At her
dull moments however she discourses
learnedly on history or art or philosophy
Henry James discloses no erudition in
his uncompromisingly dull and stupid
pages Yet for all this The Embassa
dors is one of the notable books of the
year and should be read
Then there is The Little Shepherd of
Kingdom Come which despite its mul
tifarious short comings is a good story
It is interesting to note the number of
books by western authors and on west
ern topics The Virginian while belong
ing to last years crop has been a much
read book this year One of the meri
torious books of the western class is The
Biography of a Western Girl an unpre
tentious little volume but one that is
entitled to a far wider circle of readers
than it will have Will Paynes Mr
Salt is attracting attention One critic
said that she turned with relief to Judith
of the Plains from Mrs Wards much
vaunted tale It should be the source
of gratification to us that western au
thors are receiving recognition and we
owe it to them as well as to ourselves
to give them every encouragement
Neither in the line of fiction nor in
any other line has there been any re
markable achievement during 1903 but
there are bright spots that give us not a
little hope for the future

Mr John H Cullom editor of the

letter of congratulations to the manu
facturers of Chamberlains Cough Rem
edy as follows Sixteen years ago when
our first child was a baby he was subject
to croupy spells and we would be very
uneasy about him We began using
Chamberlains Cough Remedy in 1887
and finding it such a reliable remedy for
colds and croup we have never been
without it in the house since that time
We have 5 children and have given it
to all of them with good results One
good feature of this remedy is that it is
not disagreeable to take and our babies I
really like it Another is that it is not
dangerous and there is no risk from
giving an overdose I congratulate you
upon the success of your remedy For
