citizens of McCook to hear Congressman E J Burkett of the First district deliver his lecture on The New Woman and the Young Man and we feel authorized by tho indices at tho lecture and ull the expressions since heard to state that none went away feeling disappointed and expressions of enthusiastic approval aro not lacking The congressmans style is not con ventional in any respect Ho is rather erratic sticking to the text is not one of his strong points but he sayB some thing worthwhile every time A man of strong convictions and practical obser vations he uses vigorous language to ex press his views and does not essay beauty of diction or even have a care as to pre ciseness in his grammar He has a regular Uncle Joshvoice and the man nerisms of an exhorfer who has learned much in practical politics and campaign ing Ho is ever forceful and at times his words come with a rush of a cyclone an oratorical impetuosity that quite carries his audience with him He regards the new woman as the most serious problem confronting the young man whom she is giving a lively leading in all the avenues of commercial life education the professions etc He advised the young men that they would have to hurry and apply themselves if they hoped to compete with the industry and sticktoitiveness of the new woman whose education and fidelity and de- pondableness have made a way for her everywhere where the young man form erly held undisputed sway He gave as some of the indices of man hood of the quality he admired and the world had use for f industry frugality honesty in fine the doing man the one who gave tho best account of himself possible in every situation His ideal man is robust unfrilled energetic per sistent a man with a genius for work It may be stated too that his new woman is not a gaudy butterfly of fashion who secures immunity from work at the expense of her mothers health and clothes beyond her means and station at tho price of her fathers im poverishment a giddy knownothiDg and donothing She is an educatedcultured energetic sensible young woman unos tentatiously performing her part in the various lines of human activity in edu cation art business philanthropic and religious lines etc The congressmans young man con templated nothing like the typical dude inane purposeless a mere manikin of fashion gnawing the knob of his robust walking stick and cumbering the earth but is the personification of well and persistently and wisely and honestly di rected effort and energy Enfin sme of the congressmans characteristics amused us but most of his ideas pleased us mightily A JOYOUS SOCIAL OCCASION The reception tendered the normalites in the court room Wednesday evening was one of the pleasantest of the social affairs incident to the sessions
