Of tho 11193 acres planted to sugar-
beets In Nebraska in 1902 Redwillow
county planted 640 acres making it the
sixth county in the state in the total
acreage planted The five counties
tvEich xceed it are Dodge 2109 Hall
1253 Lincoln 1187 Buffalo 982 and
Madison 731 Lancaster with 528 was
the next in acreage to Redwillow
Labor Commissioner Watson has given
out the fallowing items of interest con
cerning the sugar beet industry
The factories are located at Grand
Island Norfork and Ames During the
year the factories have made 22890000
pounds of sugar and have received 102

The court room was filled last even
ing on the occasion of the lecture by
M J Stritch S J dean of the college
of literature of Creighton uuiversity
Omaha It was an eloquent and able
lecture on a great subject The man
the times and the comedy were given
the treatment of a careful student and
boundless admirer of the immortal
singer whose fame has in no wise been
dimmed by the passing of more than six
centuries Thoso who heard tho lecture
will read Dante in tho future with a
vision widened and quickened and with
a conception more intelligent and accur
ate The dean is scholarly fluent
clever pleasing enthusiastic liberal
up-to-date His lecture was a joy Tho
library board is to be congratulated

J B Dies of His Injuries
Monday morning while crossing one
of the yard tracks near the stock yards
J B Roshong of Valley Grange precinct
i was run ovt r by car- the yard crow was
switching to ono of the repair tracks
t sustaining injuries from which he died
the following evening about half past
seven
Efforts were made to warn the old
man o f bis danger but they were either
misunderstood or unheard and the
wheels cut off ono leg besides produc
ing head injuries
The injured man was removed to the
home of Rev J E Tirrill on East Rail
road street where death relieved his suf
ferings tho following evening
Funeral services were conducted in
tho Methodist church Thursday after
noon at 2 oclock by Rev L II Shu
mate after which intermont was made
in Riverview cemetery
J B Roshong was born in Holmes
county Ohio February 9lh 1837 died
in McCook Nebraska January 27tb
1903 He was united in marriage with
Margret Benjamin April 7th 1859 Ho
and family moved to Redwillow county
Nebraska in November 1892 A wife
and four children survivo him De
t ceased was a private soldier in Company
C 142nd regiment of Ohio volunteer
infantry
The deceased and wife have been liv
ing on a small parcel of land on the east
side of the old Maxwell farm just south
of town on the Oberlin road Two of
the children live in this county and two
over in Kansas south of here Mrs
Haskell Tirrill of McCook and MrsAM
Benjamin of Banksville Mrs Mitchell
andLafo Roshong of Decatur county
Kansas
The bereaved wife children and
friends have the profoundest sympathy
in this tragic death of husband and
father
Gospers Postmaster Disappears
Tuesday January 13th Pearl Kaser
postmaster of Gosper Gosper county
went to Arapahoe with the cream
wagon as Usual put his team in Sail
ors livery barn took the train for the
west supposedly coming to this city
with a party of congenial friends and
since then no word or trace has been
had of him The bondsmei are now in
charge of the office An inspector was
on hand last Saturday and discovered
the office to be in wretched condition
and the postmaster about 500 sbort on
his accounts Kaser had not made out
the customary January report of post
office business and it supposed that his
money order business is badly involved
Kaser carried on a mercantile business
in connection with the postoffice and
came up from McCook yesterday to bills are coming in against the concern
visit relatives in tho city Holdrege i which his parents thought had been
paid Kaser is thought to have taken
400 to 500 with him more than enough
to have paid all accounts against the
store
Tho missing man is said to have been
indulged by his parents to their limit
His domestic relations are said to have
been pleasant He leaves a wife and
three small children William Burke of
that place who is thought to have ac
companied him leaves a wife and seven

the house by J E Hathorn of Bartley
Dr Hathorn is a physician of good rep
utation and is a graduate of the Rush
Medical college He is a native of Maine
and is a man of middle age He re
moved from his home state to Illinois in
1970 and to Nebraska in 1886 Dr
Hathorn was a soldier in the Civil war
having served through the war as a
member of the Fast Maine heavy artil
lery Lincoln Star
Will Reach the 600 Mark
The indications now are that McCook
lodge A O U W will reach the 600
mark this month A number of
j bers are actively working for that end
1 and the indications now are that it will
oe reacnea in January xno prizes
offered for the ones who secure the
largest number of new members are by

The B M steel gang hes recently
finished laying new 80 pound steel rails
from Holdrege to this place The 70
pound rails were considered too light for

road at present at the above places

John Rydell who has been road-master
of the Hastings Oberlin division the
past six months has been transferred to
the Akron Longmont division out of
Denver for which place he left Satur
day evening The vacancy here has
been supplied by Andrew Ipson of the
Orleans St Srancis branch Mr Ipson
is an experienced railroad man and has
been roadmaster of the latter branch
for some time He will remove his
family from Orleans to this point in the

Score a Big Success
Royal Highlander lodge No 307 is to
be credited with a largo success at their
masquerade ball last Friday ovoning in
tho jMenard opera houso There was a
numerous attendance of masked dancers
and quite n SDrinkling of sight seers
making a gay and happy company
withal
The grand march was enmasque and
was led by Mr F S Vahuo and Mrs F
A Ponnell Mr Vahue not being a
good guessor
Refreshments were served on the stage
by the ladies of the order and although
it was not attempted to make this an
elaborate affair the menu was very sat
isfactory and enjoyable
The Snyder orchestra of five pieces
was iu attendance
No effort at decoration of tho hall was
made
The affair left nought but favorable
and pleasurable imnressions with nil
present
The Minstrel Show
Music for tho minstrel show has ar
rived and the work and pleasure of
practicing and rehearsing for the occa
sion is now progressing The boys have
secured a fine lot of excellent music and
have already in training tho best musi
cal talent of the city and tho other
artists which go to make up a strong
combination and the result can be but
highly satisfactory Tho date is now
set at February 23rd
