now running under full steam again every thing moving along as smoothly as can be desired turning out the popular and in domand product of that well known milling plant at an increased capacity of ono hundred barrels per day when the demand is pressing Ono of the principal improvements made to this oxcellent milling plant is the new strictly up-to-date Columbus bolter ono of the latest and most ap proved machines in the milling world This bolter separator and grader com bined makes sixty six separations from first to last of the grain and is a marvel of excellence and thoroughness in its every operation It has not only in creased the capacity of the mill but has improved the quality of its output and the many patrons of the mill will ap preciate what it means to improve the juality of such excellent brands of Hour as 01 Prido of McCook Anchor andsoforth But it has been accom plished We shall not attempt to record in detail the work performed but suffice to say that tho old machinery reception tendered the new pastor and wife Mr and Mrs Frauk W Dean by the ladies of the Dorcas society in the Congregational eh inch Friday even ing last was a charming social affair at which the guests crowded tho church Scores took advantage of the formal op portunity of meeting the new pastor and wife who moved here a few weeks since from Red Cloud A most enjoyable mixed program fol lowed the formal reception the program consisting of a piano solo by Luella Thompson a recitation by Mrs W W Archibald a song by little Marjory Schobel a quartette bv Misses Blanche McCarl Nellie West Ida McCarl and Olive M Howe a recitation by Mrs J A Gunn a song by little Velma Sutton piano solo by Miss Olive M Howe vocal solo by Mr Knud Staugland a chorus by Mrs P F McKenna Mrs Peter Foxen Misses Blanche McCarl Nellie West Ethel Oyster and Ida McCarl Messrs S B McLean F M Kimmell J G Schobel and L R McCarl Miss Howe accompanist a recitation by Mrs F W Bosworth vocal solo by F M Kimmell This feature was meritorious and was well received Light refreshments were served by the ladies in the church parlor after the completion of the program The edibles were of the usual dainty sort and were tastefully served The attractive interior of tho church was heightened by pretty and artistic effects in cut and potted flowers appro priate items of furniture flags etc Their Wedding Anniversary Conductor and Mrs C E Pope cele brated their twentieth wedding anniver sary Tuesday evening with happiest particulars and with most auspicious I circumstances ii was h uov uiuuui ituu there were present about forty guests from among their neighbors and numer ous friends The bride and grooms table was spread in the dining room and seated twelve The decorations of table and room were in scarlet and greeil red carnations and ferns Five small tables were arranged in other rooms of the home to accommodate the rest of the guests These tables were decorated in pink and white carnations An elegant four course dinner was served Mesdames U J Warren James Hatfield Margaret Oyster F W Bosworth and Miss Stella Norval assisted Cards crokinole and music were among the entertainment features of the ensuing evening A number of very pretty gifts were bestowed and all in all it was a most happy and memorable event in the lives of Conductor and Mrs Pope Mr and Mrs W P Hall of Holdrege were among the guests A Glorious Fall of Rain Saturday night Sunday and Sunday evening this section of Nebraska was visited by a steady soaking fall of rain which has been a great benefit to the small grain crop The services were conducted at tho farm by Rev J E Tirrill Sunday after which tho remains were brought to McCook and interred in Riverview cem etery The husband and son have the deep sympathy of many neighbors and friends in their sorrow Liva Jank Pixlky was born near Centrevillo Genesee county New York May 14th and died near McCook Ne braska March 22d 1902 Was united in marriage with E A Dodge who with two children still survive her Myrtle Hartman of Elcelsior Springs Arkansas and Bert Dodge who lives on the farm with his father Tho mother has gone to join another daughter gone on before The deceased came toRedwillow county in October 1899 and since No vember 1900 has been a constant sufferer with the acute agonies of a malignant cancer CARD OF THANKS I wish to thank our many friends Annual Wall Paper Exhibit Monday and Tuesday of this week Messrs McConnell Berry made their second annual exhibit of wall paper usiug the spacious Menard hall for that purpose It was a very gratifying suc cess hundreds being astonished and delighted with the exhibit made of their superb stock of the latest styles of wall paper At a cost of much labor and money samples in combination of side wall border and ceiling by the hun dreds were tastefully and conveniently displayed from racks built on the floor of the hall and from the walls of tho hall in addition papers for different purposes papers of similar styles prices andao forth were arranged in sections The display embraced a wide range of styles and prices though only such papers as are carried in stock were exhibited Messrs McConnell Berry are to be congratulated upon the fact that their enterprise in this instance has been so fully appreciated by the people of Mc Cook and vicinity who have thus been afforded an unusual opportunity of see ing under most favorable circumstances the latest product of tho wall paper manufacturers in most attractive and numerous array Each visitor was given a carnatiou as a souvenir of the opening The Good Old Game McCook has organized for base ball this season McCook always did play ball and as long as George Berry Pat Walsh John Bennett and other ancients with one foot in the grave have a voice to holler with McCook will always play ball Heres hoping for a good swift team The above from the Hastings Demo crat reminds the writer of at least one instance when a dead man was of more importance than a live one It was one fateful Fourth of July in the latter 80s and Stratton was the scene of the tragedy and victory McCook was playing Stratton and was being thor oughly pounded into the sandy soil of that community Something heroic had to be done Charlie Wahlquist fainted dead away overcome by the heat A cracker jack substituted for him and McCook won out easily Charlie had both feet in the grave and won John G Woolley in Boston For phrases that arrest the attention and challenge the memory the speech of Mr John G Woolley against the saloon delivered before
