Propose Educational Test
Kajcsxs City Mo March 10 -An
attempt is to be made by the manage
ment of the Burlington road to raise the
intellectual standard of locomotive en
gineers by refusing to employ engineers
as firemen who have not been fairly
well educated
Instructions have been issued by of
ficers of this company that hereafter a
more severe educational test will be given
applicants for the position of firemen
The instructions are part of new general
regulations regarding the employment of
men for this branch of the service
The new order specifies that appli
cants for the position of fireman must be
physicalh perfect must not be under 5
feet 7 inches nor over 6 feet finches in
height and must weigh not less than 140
nor over 210 pounds
In the way of an educational test the
following is given in the order as an
example of what applicants must be
prepared to answer
Add a column of five numbers of five
places
Subtract any number of four places
from a greater number
Multiply any number of six places by
any number of two places
Express a series of numbers containing
from one to six places in written words
Fill out a report of a suppositious
accident
Write a letter applying for a position
as fireman giving reasons for desire to
engage in railroad work and applicants
early opportunities for an education
Answer the following questions
Who discovered America
How many wars have the United
States engaged in
During what vears was the civil war
fought
Who was president during that period
Who is president now
By what party elected
In answering these questions prefer
ence will be given to applicants who
have passed the highest grade in school
The committee that will have charge
of the examinations shall be made up of
tho mechanic of the division where ap
plication is made the master mechanics
chief clerk and the road foreman
All other points being equal preference
will be given to applicants who have
been employed in other branches of the
railroad service or who may have had
some experience in the mechanical de
partment
J Applicants who have been in railroad
i work must not be under 21 years of
age nor over 23 and persons who have
had no railroad experience must not be
l older than 20 vears
Until recently an applicants educa
tional equipment was subordinated to his
physical condition ae and previous
railroad experience This resulted in
the training of many persons for the
work of an engineer whoe educational
qualifications were very deficient
Under the new orders firemen will
not be promoted to engineers positions
unless they shall have been in the
service at least two and one half years
and shall have run 121000 engine miles
The Barnett Lumber Co people have
commenced the work of taking down
some of their buildings preparatory to
moving
