" For six years I had an obstinate , running ulcer on my Pi
ankle , which at times caused me intense suffering. I was
30 disabled for a long while that I was wholly unfit for
business. One of the best doctors treated me constantly ,
iut did me no good. I then tried various blood remedies , E

SAMOAN CROWING SNAKE.
Great Natural Curiosity Tbut Infest *
JungR'H of Hcuutlful Isliiiid.
There are no venomous snakes In
Samoa , always excepting the snake
which crows. In proof of the existence
of this reptile there may be offered the
testimony of witnesses , eye-witnesses.
ear-witnesses. Any quantity of Samoans -
ans , and white people as well , will give
you detailed accounts of how they
heard the snake in the dense recesses
of the bush. They tell how their ears
caught the sound of stealthy move
ments in the tree tops overhead , and
how the faint sound stopped when they
halted to listen closer , or how it began
as soon as they resumed the march.
Inevitably the narrator closes his ac
count by a description of his escape ;
he either overtook some other wander
er in the bush and found security In
numbers , or else he made particularly
good time homeward , or remembered
a charm which had much power. When
for any of these reasons the snake
found he was to lose his victim he al
tered his silent tactics. He could be
heard thrashing the trees and crowing
like a rooster , only many times as loud ,
and as he sought some other part of
the forest the crowing was frequently
repeated , until at last it vanished in
the distance. When asked more par
ticularly as to his crowing , the Samoans -
ans say that it is exactly like the
crowing of roosters. There is an equal
host of eye-witnesses , men who have
seen crowing snakes. They never vary
from one another in their descriptions
of what they have seen. Except for
one spot of special conditions it Is nev
er seen on the ground , but always on
the tops of the highest trees , gliding
from tree to tree with remarkable ra
pidity. It is long and slender , rarely
is one spoken of as under two arm
spans or twelve feet , seldom is one de
scribed as exceeding twice that meas
urement. Its color is spoken of as
uniform , a steel blue or slate , and free
from spots or other markings. When at
rest it is difficult to distinguish it from
the branch on which it may be stretch
ed ; when in motion it goes far too
fast for any detail to be observed.

moved onto the Farlin place , about six miles
southwest of McCook , was found dead in the

and the decision of the jury was that he met
his death by his own act , by hanging himself.
The deceased left a letter in which he made il
plain that he had premeditated his end and
also made it easy for the jury to decide that
there was no foul-play. Mr. Gallagher was a
former resident of this vicinity and made
many friends while here before. He has a
family and some property. A pocket-book ,
which he mentioned in the letter , was found
in a bureau which contained $195-23. Mrs.
Gallagher arrived here , Wednesday night ,

Do You Want a Calendar ?
The biggest and bes > t calendar ever is
sued by the American railroad is now being
distributed by the Burlington Route.
It has twelve sheet * , one for each month of
the year. On each sheet is a striking illus
tration of some feature of the liurlington's
service or of the territory reached by its lines
the government fast mail running at full
speed ; a tourist car on its way to California ;
engine 1591 , the largest passenger engine in
the world ; a library car ; a compartment sleep
er ; the Burlington station at Omaha ; a din
ning car ; a monster freight train ; listes 1'ark ,
Cole , the plunge bath at Hot Springs , S. D. ,
Yellowstone Falls , etc.
The drawings from which the pictures were
made are by Louis Braunhohl , ot Chicago ,
and cost several hundred dollars.
The size of the calendar is 22x28.
The dates are in big type which can be read
at a distance of 50 feet. For business offices'
the Burlington calendar is simply invaluable.
Purchased in large quantities , the calendars
cost the Burlington Route 27 cents apiece.
With postage , packing , etc. , they represent an
investment of about 35 cents. Our price is 25
cents 10 cents less than cost. Write for one :
stamps will do. If it is not satisfactory , send
it back and your money will be promptly re
funded. 2-2-6t. J. FRANCIS ,
