placed himself on the Lord's side in the
following words : "I wish to announce to
the world that I do not hold myself in
open violence , to the word of God. "
ONE of the most distressing incidents
in the bloody history of Kentucky
closed , Saturday evening last at 6:45 , in
the death'of William Goebel by an assas
sin's bullet. It was a cowardly and das
tardly deed and there is little extenuat
ing to be urged in the fact that the slain
man had killed his man , and that his
victim's widow is in an insane asylum.
THE British losses in Africa in the last
ninety days are officially reported at over
7,000 men killed , wounded and captured.
This is many times as great as the entire
losses of the United States in the eigh
teen months since the war with Spain
began and was followed by that in the
Philippines. Yet there is still found ,
occasionally , a man with the iron nerve
to continue to criticise the conduct of
our war.
SCRATCH the average white-winged
reformer on the back and you will find a
chronic office-seeker fellows
disappointed , - ,
lows whom their own political associates
have turned down regularly and repeat
edly ; individuals with more gall than
brains , more insolent mendacity than
character. They know it all. Nothing
on earth , the heavens above or waters
beneath , is beyond their omnipotent
ability to correct or to manage ; and yet ,
in fact , these same wise and great men
may have only reached the altitude of a
blacksmith printer or shyster lawyer.
AT the Moscova , on the retreat from
Moscow , the French lost 30,000 men ; at
the battle of lyeipsic in 1813 , the French
losses were 65,000 in three days. At
Austerlitz the French lost 28,850 men ;
at Plevna , 18,000 to 20,000 Russians
were killed and wounded. At Gravel-
otte , the German loss was over 20,000 ,
and the French loss 19,000. The aggre
gate of losses at battle of Stone river in
the civil war was 13,249 on the Federal
and 10,266 on the Confederate side ; at
Gettysburg the Union loss was 23,190 , of
whom 2,834 were killed , 13,713 wounded ,
and 6,643 missing ; while the Con federate
"killed numbered about 5,000 , the wound
ed 23,000 ; prisoners , 14,000. So it will
appear that British losses in the South
African war have not been excessive
though heavy.
THB attack upon Secretary Gage , en
tered upon with such a righteous flourish
of outraged Democratic trumpets , has
subsided into something that has very
much the appearance of a farce. It was
hoped by the Democratic wallers to ex.
pose a great administration scandal in
calling for an explanation of the trans
actions between the secretary of the
treasury and the City National Bank of
New York. The secretary's clear and
satisfactory report of the transaction has
left nothing for the Democrats to ask.
The yellow journals and those smaller
Democratic papers which took up the
cry against the administration are now
backing off from their position as grace
fully as they can. The utter weakness
of the charges was shown in congress
when Mr. Richardson , the Democratic
leader in the house , took up the ques
tion of the sale by Mr. Gage of the New
York customs house , and he was so ef
fectually answered by Mr. Hopkins that
the subject was at once dropped.
First Storm of the Winter.
This section of Nebraska was visited ,
Wednesday , by the first storm of the
winter. The storm prevailed all day
and night. It was accompanied by a
slight snowfall and high wind , which
drifted the snow , but did not seriously
impede travel by rail or road , The ther-
rnoiueter has touched in the neighbor-
hood of zero every morning sit ice mak
ing the coldest snap of a splend'id winter.

Benkelmen , last night , and is working
in the headquarters.

now delving in the mysteries of housekeeping.

T. C. Lake and bride from Maxwell were
guests of C. E. Matthews and wife , Wednes

near his home in Gosper county , this year ,
and H. T. McElroy will work the Daniels
place.
A. G. Keys and S. W. Clark of this place
and C. E. Shaw and J. W. Collicott of North
Valley precincts , all stalwarts , participated in
the Republican reception and banquet in Me
Cook , Friday evening.
Guy Curlee was over from Danbury , Sun
day , distributing seven-by-nine smiles and
passing the "glad mitt" around among the
natives. He was accompanied by a friend ,
Mr. Ilymer , from the village on the Beaver.
Born , Friday , February 2d , to M. E. Corbin
and wife , an eight-pound girl. With the pos
sible exception of Murry all parties concerned
are convalescent , and his condition is such
that he has made a will bequeathing his entire
barber outfit to his heir.
Cecil Matthews takes occasion to hand him
self a boquet by stating that your correspond
ent cribs his grist from the columns of the
"weakly squirt-gun. " The amateur editor of
the monstrosity no doubt feels guilty in view
of the fact that he never hears of two-thirds
of the news items that appear in this column
until after THE TRIBUNE arrives here.
A stranger from the west end of the county
was in town , one day this week , and after a
remark about the weather said to a native , "I
believe Cecil Matthews is editing your paper
here , isn't he ? " Whereat the native bristled
up and said , "Say , - you , are you looking
for a fight ? " and the stranger changed the
subject , noting that we are a little sensitive on
that score down here.
Our amateur editor seems to think it un
usual for a person to be born with nothing ,
and broadly intimates that when he arrived
on the scene in addition to his eighteen-karat
nerve and unsatiated desire for office he was
accompanied by a change of shirt studs and a
week's supply of "Battle-Ax" in a steamer
trunk. But it should be remembered that the
ex-milk-peddler , ex-pig-sticker , ex-farm-hand ,
ex-plasterer , ex-hobo-printer , all around cheap
screw and omnipresent office-seeker is rather
out of the ordinary anyhow.
If any one with two grades of sense- above
an oyster had accused us of plagiarizing the
matter which has appeared in this column
from the "weakly squirt-gun"we really should
feel quite discouraged ; but coming as it does
from the amateur in charge of the same we'll
pass it up and , as heretofore , endeavor in our
humble fashion to give the news of this com
munity , since THE TRIBUNE is recognized by
all as the only medium of the kind in the local
field. We are not stuck on our ability as a
news-gatherer , and our time is otherwise en
gaged , but a comparative glance at this col
umn and the "squirt-gun" will demonstrate to
any one that , despite his self-laudatory efforts ,
the amateur is thoroughly outclassed in the
matter of news-getting.
We hardly expected to get the whole TRIB
UNE force and the county officials "roasted"
we have the amateur's word for it that it was
a "roast" when we mentioned little Cecil's
Kentucky thirst for office , some time since.
However , in the course of his ravings , he
pleads guilty to working his little petition to
get himself named as Green's deputy , the
same being signed by one man who repre
sented , as far as we can learn , "the Popu
lists , Democrats and anti-Clark Republicans
of Red Willow county. " He also modestly
admits that he was promised Bennett's dep-
utyship , and that immediately thereafter the
third-term ticket appeared more- favorable to
him , and he came within ten votes of learning
that he was seventieth man on Bennett's list.
In politics , as in everything else , there is a
good deal of the jay about the amateur.
The school entertainment , Friday evening ,
was a decided success in every respect , and
the receipts were $34.10. The attendance was
about three hundred , quite a number from
Indianola and Cambridge being present. The
feature of the program was the part taken by
the old foiks , who were rejuvenated for the
evening. Adults of ages ranging from fifty to
seven-five years declaimed and sang the selec
tions of their childhood days , and after this
part of the program a spelling contest was in
dulged in by about fifty aspirants. Mrs. John
Matthewson was the victor , John Glandon se
cured second place , and R. C. Catlett third.
Prizes were awarded as follows : First , a pop
corn ball a foot in diameter ; second , s. dough
nut two feet long ; third , a pumpkin pie a foot
square. The contest was followed by refresh
ments consisting of ice cream.cake and cocoa.
All had a good time and went home reluct
antly. _

preaching and other religious services , Sunday
afternoon.
The perseverance of the wolf-seekers was
rewarded by the capture of one wolf in lasl

W. E. Corwin threatens to dynamite Dry
creek , but we believe he will content himsell
with blowing up a few trees.
Bert Overman , of W. S. Morlan's ranch , has
received the news from Ft. Lupton , Colorado ,
of the serious illness of his father.
The Bible-class decided to change from the
Old to the New Testament , and to take the
first five chapters of St. Mathew for their nexl
lesson.
Bible-study as usual , next Sunday , promptly
at three o'clock. Mrs. I. H. Wasson will lead
the devotional services. All are cordially in
vited.
Henry Gale and family expect to move into
South Side , shortly. Mr. Gale is an old settler
in Red Willow county , and is well known in
South Side.
Several of the South Siders have been at
tending the revival meetings held at the
Christian church of McCook , and all pro
nounce them good. '
Messrs. Owen and Louis Longnecker of
Red Willow attended the preaching services ,
last Sunday afternoon. The boys are well
known in South Side and are always welcome.
Frank A. Fitch was among those who were
entertained at the Commercial hotel in Mc
Cook by the Republican county central com
mittee , last Friday evening , and he reports a
very successful gathering.
Some of the South Side young people met
with the spiiitualist circle , last Friday night ,
and after an unusually long session the circle
began to break up , and finally the company
dwindled to two , although the clock declared
that it was four a. m.
Last Wednesday evening , was the monthly
election of officers of the South Side Debating
club and the different places were filled with
very competent people. Captain Wasson at
last kindly consented to take the office of
president and we feel that the success of the
society is certain.
A Night of Terror.

Mr. and Mrs. Mitchell Young were \ibitors
of the county capital , last Friday.
T. E. McDonald arrived home , Satuiday ,
from his trip to Omaha , returning via Mc
Cook , where he took in the reception and
banquet.-Friday night last.
Mrs. T. E. McDonald entertained Mr. and
-Mrs. A. L. Johnson and Mrs. A. P. Fair oi
Beatrice , and Mrs. W. G. McFall of Lincoln ,
last week , the gathering being in the nature
of a family reunion.
One hundred and fifty cows and fifty calves
were recently driven here from Bird City.Kan-
sas. They are the property of the Seigle-
Saunders Co. , and are now on the Underwood
farm near here.
W. T. Henton and wife have the deep sym
pathy of all in the death of their infant daugh
ter , Tuesday of last week. The remains weie
buried in Hamburg cemetery , Wednesday fol
lowing , Rev. Mayfield of the Methodist church
conducting the services.
The Republican reception and banquet in
McCook , last Friday night , attracted a num
ber of committeemen and delegates fiom this
town and vicinity. We note among those
present : T. E. McDonald , O. B. Woods , A. E.
Beetler and J. B. Rozell. The boys all report
a big time.
James Williams took his niece , Miss Alice
Hoe , over to McCook , Monday , and from that
place on the following morning , she departed
for Chicago , for medical treatment. His
daughter Lizzie , who has been a guest in R. B.
Archibald's family for a week past , returned
home with him , Monday afternoon.
W. T. Henton was deterred from attending
the Republican banquet and reception in Mc
Cook , last Miday night , by a recent death in
his family , having but just laid away one of
his children a sorrow in which he has the
sympathy of many friends. By the by , Mi.
Henton's cup of misfortune and sorrow has
been full and running over.

E. B. Munday , a lawyer of Henrietta , Tex. ,

There is a rumor that J.S.Phillips was badly
used up in Missouri , recently , by a resident on
whom he had made a "gun-play. "
Andrew Barber's twelve-year-old son died
on Saturday evening of pneumonia. The
funeral occurred from the Methodist church ,
Monday morning.
H. W. Keyes took in the Republican recep
tion and bannuet in McCook , last Friday
night. Mrs. Keyes accompanied him , and
they were the guests of their old Wilber
friends , Agent Thomson and family , returning
home on Saturday morning.
Henry Crabtree , Will McCool , E. S. Hill ,
J. B. Fisher , Charles Skolla , R. W. White. W.
O. Bond and Art Crabtree were among those
from Indianola who attended the Republican
reception and banquet given in McCook , last
Friday night. A fine , enthusiastic time
something in the nature of a love feast was
enjoyed.
Misses Gertrude and Effie Teel went down
to Lincoln , Friday last , the former to take
treatment for rheumatism at the sanitarium ,
and the latter to attend business college.
Mrs. Teel is in Stratton and other points out
west , this week , organizing lodges of the
order of Royal Neighbors , an auxiliary to the
Woodmen order.

Last week , Mrs. Cheney received back pay

lands and buildings will offer some 1,360 acres
of school land at public auction in McCook ,
Thursday , March 1st. The auction will occur
m the office of County Treasurer Thompson ,
commencing at one o'clock in the afternoon.
This section had a number of stalwart Re
publicans at the reception and banquet given
by the Republican county central committee
m McCook , last Friday. Among the number
we note : Esben P. Day , J. B. Gumming , K. P.
High and William Iliersekorn , all straight
goods and a yard wide. The affair is highly
spoken of by all present.
