lives a happy wife. She writes : " I
have used Mother's Friend before
two confinements. The last time I had
twins , and was in labor only a few min
utes , Suffered very little. " The reason
why
'nen <
doss expectant mothers so much
good is because it is an external liniment ,
to be applied upon the outside , where
much cf the strain comes. It helps be
cause Me pores of the skin readily absorb
it , and it comes into direct contact \vith
and is absorbed by the parts involved.
Morning sickness is quickly banished ,
and nervousness is kept completely away.
The sense of dread and foreboding is not
experienced , even during labor jtself.
Confinement is short and almost without
pain. Recovery is quick and sure. Best
of all , Mother's Friend benefits the
unborn just as much as the expectant
mother , and when the little one comes it
will be strong , lusty and healthy.

Ono of the best evidences of the value
of lightuiug k-jds up to dnto has been
afforded by the Washington monument
It is capped by a email four sided pyra
mid of aluiniuinm , which metal , BO
cheap today , \vn very costly nt the
time of the building of the greatest
obelisk that the world has ever known.
his aluminium tip is connected with
the ground by four ooppor rods which
go down ( loop into the earth. Ou April
5 , 1885 , live immense bolts of electrici
ty wore seen to flash between the monument
ment and thundercloud overhanging
in the course of 20 minutes. In other
words , the monument was struck fierce
ly five times , but it Buffered no damagq
whatever.
Ou June 15 of the same year a more
tremendous nesault was made upon the
monument from the heavens , and the
result was a fracture of one of the top
most stones. Tbo crack still remains to
show what nature can do in the way ofc
an electrical shock , but the slightuoss
of the damage is evidence of man's
power to protect himself from such at
tacks. The obelisk is ideally located for
attracting electrical assaults from the
skies , and yet , while many times hit , it
has suffered only once , and that tiuio tea

The Honr of Lincoln' * Shooting.
A highly interesting Etory is told to
account for the fact that almost every
wooden clock in America has its hands
painted to indicate the hour of 18 min
utes past 8. It is related that most such
watchmakers' signs were originally
made by one man , who was nt first in
the habit of painting the hands to indi
cate any old or yonng hour that struck
his fancy when ho came to that part of
the job. Bnt when President Lincoln
was assassinated he conceived the idea
of commemorating the event by record
ing the hour and minute thereof upon
all his wooden timepieces , a custom
ever since perpetuated. There is some
thing striking and dramatic about this
notion of time standing still forever
after an event of snch tragic signifi
cance. There is no doubt about the fact
that nearly nil the wooden clocks do in
dicate the hour of 18 minutes past 8.
Yon can see that for yourself. Bnt if the
clockmaker thought he was thereby re
cording tlie bonr of the nesahsiuation
his intelligence was as wooden as his
wares , for 'President Lincoln was shot
not at 18 minutes past 8 , bnt at about
16 minutes past 10. New York Post
A Timely Event.
The bell at the parsonage went ting-
'a-ling , and , as the dominie was in his
stndy and his wife getting the baby to
sleep , Master Harold , aged 7 , went to
the door. On opening it he found a
conple , evidently from the country ,
both young and bashful ; but , after
looking at the boy a moment , the young
man queried , "Is the parson to home ? "
"Yes"said Harold. "Do yon want
to get married ? "
"That's just what we're here for , "
said the prospective bridegroom as he
looked fondly at the blushing girl by
his side.
"Well , come right in , then , " said
the boy , ushering them into the parlor ,
and when they had seated themselves
on the edge of two chairs side by side
he started off , saying : "I'll call pa , and
ma too. She'll be awful glad , for she
has all the marryin money , and I heard
her tell pa this mornin that she wished
some folks would come to get married ,
'cause she hadn't 'uough money to buy
hemew hat. ' Chicago News.
Live Long1.
A French writer notes that , though a
few great musicians have died young
to wit , Mozart at 85 , Schubert at 81 ,
Bellini at 83 , Mendelssohn at 88 and
Weber when he was but 40 a large
number have lived to be very old men.
Those who died between 60 and 70
years of age include Bach , Von Bulow
and Eubinstein. Living beyond 70 years
came Gluck , Gounod , Handel , Liszt ,
Meyerbeer , Rossini , Spontini and Wag
ner , while the great age of 89 was at
tained by Auber and others. Dying at
more than 80 were Ghernbini , Cramer ,
Lachner , Palestrina , Rameau , Schutz
and Taubert. The average ago of music
al celebrities is about 67 years.
Good Reasons For Giving- .
At the meeting of the Fifeshiro asso
ciation held in London Dr. Wallace told
a story of a pensioner who used to stand
with a placard on his breast enumerat
ing his claims to the coppers he begged.
The list ran thus : "Battles , 4 ; wounds ,
5 ; children , 6 ; total , 15. " This is al
most as good as Sir M. Grant-Duff's
story of the Irish beggar who prayed ,
"For the love of God , sir , give me a
crust , for I am so thirsty that I don't
know where I shall sleep tonight ! "

A clergyman once complained to
Bishop Blomfield of London that his
parishioners were indifferent to his
teachings.
"No sooner , " said he , "do I begin to
preach than they begin to doze. "
"Do you , " asked the bishop , "preach
your own sermons ? "
"Always , my lord , always. "
"Then , my good friend , suppose you
try some one else'e , " retorted the bishop
The Apparent Difference.
Johnny Pa , some of the curious people
ple round here they call "odd" and
some of the others "eccentric. " What's
the difference ?

tric , he usually has more or less money.
When he is poor , a man is simply odd.

With the BMT
England has inflicted far greater land
disasters on her redoubtable neighbor ,
France , than all the military monarch
ies of Europe pnt together. English
armies for 120 years ravaged Franco ,
while England has not ccen the fires of
a French cainp since the battle of Hast
ings. English troops have twice taken
the French capital , an English king
was crowned at Paris , a French king
rode captive through London , a French
emperor died in * English captivity and
his remains were surrendered by Eng
lish generosity. Twice the English1
horse marched from Calais to the Pyr
enees , once from the Pyrenees to Ca
lais ; the monuments of Napoleon in
the French capital at thie moment ewe
their preservation from German revenge
to an English general.
All the great disasters and days of
mourning for Franco since the battle of
Hastings Tenchebray , Cressy , Poi tiers ,
Agiucourt , Vomouil , Crovnnt , Blen
heim , Ondenardo , Ramillies , Malpla-
quot , Mindeu , Dottiugen , Quebec ,
Egypt , Talavora , Salamanca , Vittoria ,
the Pyrenees , Ortbes , Waterloo were
gained by English generals , and won ,
for the mosft part , by English soldiers.
Even at Fontcnoy , the greatest victory of
which Franco can boast since Hastings ,
every regiment in the French army was
on their own admission routed by the
terrible English column , and victory
was snatched from its grasp solely from
want of support on the part of the
Dutch and Austriaus. Alison's "Life

Henry Ward Beecher was once approached
preached by a young man who consid
ered himself very clever.
"Do you know , Mr. Beecher , " said
he , "I've been thinking that I would
settle down , behave myself and join
your church. Now , I like your preaching -
ing , but when I go to your church and
see such men as old S. and others ,
grasping skinflints and hypocrites to
the core , sitting there in full member
ship , why , the thing is jnsfc a little too
much for me , and really"he added ,
"I cannot join. "
"Well , you're right , " said Mr.
Beecher. "Every church has such men ,
and I fancy Plymouth is not free from
them , and until you spoke I have always
wondered why the good Lord permitted
it. Now I understand. "
"AJb , " gurgled the young fellow , "I
am glad I have thrown light on the
question 1 What strikes you as the rea
son , Mr. Beecher ? " '
"Well , " replied the great preacher ,
"it is permitted in order to keep just
such fools as yon out of the churches. "
The Peasant and Bis Son.
One day a peasant carried a basket
of potatoes to the field and dug holes in
the soil and planted them. His young
son watched operations for a time and
then inquired :
"Daddy , why do you put those taters
in the ground ? "
"By so doing each one will bring me
back ten , my son , " replied the father.
The-boy went away , and when his
father came up to dinner he found him
digging in the yard and asked :
"Sonny , what are you seeking ? "
"Why , daddy , I have planted the
clock , two umbrellas , the teapot , your
Sunday hat , ma's boots and a tablecloth ,
and each one will bring me back ten. "
"You young idiot , come here and be
skelped ! " shouted the father , and be
tanned the boy up and down , crossways
and sideways , until he was tired.
"Daddy planted taters to get back
ten , " mused the boy as ho sat down un
der the cow shed to think. "But I plant
ed clocks and hats and boots to get ; a
licking. It must bo the difference in , the
soil. " Pearson's Weekly.

The Kaiser's Latest.
The German emperor has devised a
new scheme for the encouragement of
vocal music in the German empire. It
will be put into operation in 1899 , and
it consists of a singing competition to
bo held in a different town every year.
Cassel has been selected for the first
competition , the chief condition of
which is that each choir taking part
will receive an unpublished musical
composition about an hour before the
contest takes place. There will be no
accompaniment :
The kaiser's prize is a valuable jewel ,
and the president of tbo winning choir
Will be allowed to wear it for a year ,
