Engineer and Mrs Chambers are visiting -
ing in the east.
The railroads of Holland will transport -
port bicycles as baggage , any distance ,
for 70 cents in their money , equivalent
to 28 cents of ours.
This department of the paper does not
care what your politics are , but , = 'if you
want the latest railroad news of the day ,

A colonization company organized at
Sioux City , Iowa , has purchased 20,000
acres of land along the Mobile & Ohio
railroad , sixty miles riortlc of DIolile.
Kansas City railroads have unearthed
a system of robbing cars of freight in
transit which has been operated success
fully for several years , at an estimated
loss of $20,000 during the last three
years to the roads.
The Southern Pacific's Atlantic system
has abondoned the use of brass checks
for checking local baggage , substituting
cardboard checks attached to baggage
by twine. They have proved so satisfactory -
tory that they will be continued per-
manently.
It is reported that the Baltimore &
Ohio railroad will soon enter Kansas
City , Lilo. They will enter over the partly -
ly constructed Winner bridge , which is
to be finished at once , and by building
100 miles of track they will get direct
connection
The Southern railway has issued a
circular directing that employes who
have been in its service for a period of
one year or more shall be given leave of
absence and passes to Atlanta , Ga. , to attend -
tend the exposition , for themselves , their
wives and dependent children. This
system has a total mileage of 4,334
miles.
A car of whisky en route east over the
Big Four road exploded on the night of
September 21st near Leroy , Illinois , and
Conductor Murphy and Brakeman Mul-
doon were slighly burned. There were
sixty-five barrels in the cat , valued at
about $6,000. The car took fire from
some unknown cause and the explosion
was occasioned by the brakeman knock-
ingin the top for the purpose of pouring
in water.
From the recent published statistics of
Russian railways we cull the following :
"The length opened for traffic in the year
1843 was 1,128 miles. This makes the
total in operktion in that country 21,884
miles , of which 8,225 miles were owned
by the government. There are 4,362
miles o double track. These figures in-
eludes 9oS miles of the Trans-Caspian
railroad , and 1,317 miles in Finland. At
the close of iS9J 3,912 miles of new railroad -
road were under construction.
The Muir tunnel on the Northern Pacific -
cific , near Livingston , Montana , took
fire on September 13th and had to be
sealed up. A switchback was immediately -
ately constructed over the mountain
through which the tunnel runs. A great
freight blockade has been caused by this
delay and over 500 cars are sidetracked
in the yards at Helena alone , with hundreds -
dreds more at intermediatepoiiits. Passenger -
senger trains and perishable freight are
all that are moving and it will take ten
days at least to clear the blockade. The
fire is in the center of the tunnel , which
is 3,800 feet long.
The ill-fated project for constructing
a canal across the Isthmus of Panama is
likely , it is said , ere long to enter upon
a new and more promising stage. Mr.
Philip Weigel , Jr. , of New Brunswick ,
N. J. , has , with two other wealthy Americans -
icans , formed a syndicate , the object of
which is to purchase the entire interest
and plant of the Inter-Oceanic Canal
Co. , with a view of the completion of
the work. The sum which these enterprising -
prising gentlemen are preparing to put
down is stated , on the authority of Mr.
Weigel himself , to be no less than one
hundred million dollars.

The Darlington , IVis. , Journal says editorially -
ially of a popular patent medicine : "We
know from experience that Chamberlain's
Colic , Cholera and Diarrhea Remedy is all
that is claimed for it , as on two occasions it
stopped excruciating pains and p' ssibly saved -
ed us from an untimely grave. We would not
rest easy over night without it in the house" .
This remedy undoubtedly saves more pain
and suffering than any other medicine in the
world. Every family should keep it in the
house , for it is sure to be needed sooner or
later. For sale by McConnell Co. , drug-
gists. e
