The Southern California railway has
now 18 locomotives in regular service
burning oil , and the 'results are quite
satisfactory. In July about Iooo tons
of oil were used and August about 1,200.
India has 13,855 miles of railroad in
operation , with 2,217 miles more under
construction. There are over ioooo ,

the balance being narrow gauge ,
The C. , B. & Q. is reported as surveying -
ing for a branch line from Clarion , Iowa ,
through Moravia and Iconium to Bloomfield -
field , and it is thought probable that it
will be continued at an early date to
St. Louis.
A lap order on the Great Northern
railway , last week , caused a collision
near Melby , Minn. , between passenger
trains. Both engines were wrecked , and
also the nail and express cars. Both
engineers , one fireman , a mail clerk and
m express messes r were killed , and
about twelve persons injured.
The Missouri , Kansas & Texas , byy the
late purchase of a line from Green Ridge
to Holden , Mo. , a distance of 35 miles ,
has formed a new through route from

The Washington Post has this to say
of the "Old school conductors down
south" : At the North and in the West
the conductor is as uncommunicative an
officeras a policeman. He never smiles
or relaxes for a moment when on duty.
He knows no one in the discharge of his
duty , which he goes through with military -
tary exactness. On rare occasions lie
will nod to a commuter , but the nod is
not to be taken as any evidence ofrelax-
ation of official routine. He is addressed
as "Conductor" and seems to have no
name beside that. The moment you
cross the Potomac everything is differ-
ent. The conductor is called "Captain" ;
knows everybody ; has something
pleasant to say and is ever ready to succor -
cor a distressed maiden or an old lady in
difficulty. He will stop the train between -
tween stations , if he catches sight of an
old lady driving down the road , and will
help her out of the carriage , bundles and
all , and say : "This way , grandma , to
he ladies' car" , and find her a comfortable -
able seat , and inquire about t h e
of her entire family. Then
he jerks the bell for the train to
nove on. He knows every inmate
of the farm or plantation on his run.
Often he is an old soldier , and runs up
against an old comrade , and then dire
threats are made about putting him off
the train if he don't "hand out that
ticket right away" . Always friendly ,
pleasant and provincial , but never vulgar -
gar , he is a terror to the occasional
tough or drummer who gets noisy or
oud , and is not afraid of anything that
wears clothes. If there is an accident
he has nerve , sense and forethought , and
comes out uncommonly strong as an
emergency man.

In a recent letter to the manufacturers Mr.
W. F. Benjamin , editor of the Spectator ,
Rushford , N. Y. , says. It may be a pleasure
to you to know the high esteem to which
Chamberlain's medicines are held by the
people of your own state , where the must be
best known. An aunt of mine who resides
at Dexter , Iowa , was about to visit me , a few
years since , and before leaving home wrote
me , asking if they were sold here , stating if
they were not she would bring a quantity with
her , as she did not want to be without them" .
The medicines referred to are Chamberlain's
Cough Remedy , famous for its cures of colds
and croup ; Chamberlain's Pain Balm for
rheumatism , lame back , pains in the side and
chest , and Chamberlain's Colic , Cholera and
Diarrhoea Remedy for bowel complaints.
These medicines have been in constant use
in Iowa for almost a quarter of a century.
The people have learned that they are articles
of great worth and merit , and unequalled b _
any other. They are for sale by McConnell &
Co. , druggists.
