This is the outgrowth of dissatisfaction - satisfaction over the "homeseekers" ex- cursions. The employes of the Chicago , Burlington - ton & Quincy railroad company at the end of 1892 numbered 28,745. At the end of 1894 the falling off in traffic had cut down the number to 21,115 , a reduction - tion of 7,630. The gross earnings of this company in 1894 were less by $6,375,837 than in 1893 , and its expenditures for operations were cut down $5,023,912.- World Herald. Word from Wisconsin conveys the news of the death of Tam Murphy , a former Burlington engineer before the great strike. Tom had been a sufferer all winter with rheumatism. He was a well known character on the Western division in the early days , where he had a great reputation for physical prowess. He was city marshal of Hastings in the early history of that city. Many will hear of his death with regret. The Railway Age in a recent issue says , editorially , that there will be about 23,000 miles of road built during 1895 , in the United States and territories , which will be more than has been constructed - structed in the past four years. If that is the case , and the Railway Age speaksau- thoritatively presumably , Nebraska will get her proportion. Red Cloud should , therefore , look after her interests along the railway line and see if it is not possible - sible to secure the Rack Island.
