One of L. I. Barger's children is quite
ill. George Rule and S. H. Heard also
have sick children in their families.
The B. & M , boarding car , west of
town , was robbed of nearly all its contents -
tents on last Friday night , but the goods
were all returned after a little chase.-

E. H. Andrus , formerly with the
Burlington , is now in the land department -
ment of the Union Pacific , with headquarters -
quarters at Kansas City. He won't he
missed real seriously.
Last Thursday was Miss Grace Row-
ell's birthday anniversary , and the fact
was very happily emphasized by a company -
pany of the young Miss's friends who
gave her a happy and complete surprise
party on the evening of that day.
J. P. Wolfe , who had a foot crushed
off some time ago while getting off a
moving train at Atlanta , and has been
under the care of the B. & M. surgeon
at Holdrege sincewas brought to his
home this week.-Bertrand cor. Holdrege
Citizen.
The Burlington's No , 4 passenger train
was held up by train robbers , last Pri-
day evening , near Ottumwa , Iowa , and
the express messenger robbed of a considerable -
siderable sum of money. There were
two men in the gang disguised as farmers -
ers and they have not as yet been apprehended -
hended , although a score of detectives
are after them.
RED CLOUD , Neb. , Jan. Io.-Special. ]
Today at noon while a freight train
was passing through a cut several miles
west of here it crashed into the wagon
of a mover who was crossing the track.
The tongue and one front wheel were
left attached to the team which escaped
uninjured. The occupant of the wagon
was thrown on the pilot where he held
Ott until the train was brought to a stop.
He was uninjured-Journal.
Engineer T. Haley and J. Mullen of
McCook are late arrivals on the Wyoming -
ing division and are running out of
Sheridan. , . .Ed. Parrell of McCook
has concluded that farming in Red Willow -
low county is not a success , and has returned -
turned to railroading. He went to Sheridan -
idan , Wednesday , where he has secured
a position. . . . Machinist W. Lambert of
Sheridan has gone to McCook. He will
return to Sheridan with his family in a
few days. , . .Engineer J. R. Burton of
Sheridan has been transferred back to
the western division and left Alliance
with his family on the 6th inst. for Mc-
Cook.-Alliance Grip.
The railroad men of this city have organized -
ganized a social club with Prank Hawks-
worth as president : George Rule , secretary -
retary ; John R. Roxby , treasurer. The
headquarters of the club are in the
A. 0. U. W. temple building , over the
south store room on Main avenue ,
where the club now have a suite of
two rooms which they are endeavoring
to increase to four by securing two more
rooms adjoining on the north. The
memberships now almost one hundred.
Quite an amount of reading material has
already been provided , and more will be
arranged for in the future. The club
has already become a popular resort
among the railroad boys.
The through freight from Kansas City
to Denver struck the covered wagon of
a young man who was on his way to
Chase county , at the narrows five miles
west of town Thursday at noon. The
team , a span of mules , had crossed the
track and escaped with the tongue , one
wheel and the wreck of the axletree and
and other wheel attached to them ; the
balance of the wagon was completely
demolished including the trunk of the
driver. His cooking utensils , provisions
and feed for the team was scattered over
the ground. He was thrown onto the
pilot where , his fall having probably
been broken by the canvass wagon
cover , he clung unhurt until the train
stopped and allowed the impromptu pas.

Petitions of county clerk and sheriff asking
for neputies and assistants read and considered -
ered , and of motion same were granted , and
the salaries were fixed as follows :

Soldiers' Relief commission consisting of
Willis Gossard , E. Sl. Woods and Jacob Stein-
metz , appeared before the board and made
report or all moneys received and disbursed
by them from March 18th. 1803. to January Otb ,
1895. It appearing to the board that a balance
of5340still remains in the bands of Jacob
Steinmetz , he was directed to at once turn the
same over to the county treasurer and file a
receipt for the same with this board. Otherwise -
wise report of said commission is approved.
On motion Willis Gossard was appointed one
of the Soldiers' Relief Commission to serve
three years.

ORDINANCE No. 61.
AN ORDINANCE TO ESTABI.Isti AND REGU-
I.ATE WATER PRESSURE FOR USE IN TIlE
CITY OF McCooK , NEBRASKA , FOR FIRE
AND LAWN PURPOSES , AND TO PROVIDE A
I'ENALTY FOI : THE VOI.ATION OF TILE
SAME.
Be it ordained by the Mayor and City Council -
cil of the City of McCook :
Section I. The Lincoln Land Company
having entered into a contract with the City
of McCook , to furnish an adequate supply of
water for use in thirty fire hydrants , for which
the City of McCook have agreed agreed to
pay , annually , in advance the sum of $150.00 ,
in equal payments. quarterly , in advance , and
said corpurauuu having entered into a further
contract with said city on behalf of the citizens
of said city , whereby said corporation is to
furnish to said citizens , upon application for
and the payment of the water rates specified
in said contract , an adequate supply of wader
for domestic use , irrigation of lots and other
purposes , said Lincoln Land Company , its
assigns and legal representatives are required
to keep in its stand-pipe in said city , at all
times , not less than sixty feet of water , and
that all fire hydrants be connected with said
stand-pipe so that water will flow at once for
use in case of fire.
Section 2. The Chief of Police shall provide -
ide a gauge , at some convenient place , at the
expense of the city , that will register the nun-
beret feet of waterrn the stand-pipe aforesaid ,
and he shall take a register of the water contained -
tained therein at least twice during each : day
and night ; he shall record the same in a book
kept for that purpose , giving accurately the
measurement , and the time when it was taken.
A report shall be made giving the measurements -
ments of the water to the City Council al its
last meeting ir. each month , and the book. con-
taming the measurements of water shall at all
times be open for the inspection of the Mayor
and Council. Provided that to case said
gauge shows less than sixty feet of water in
said stand-pipe , the officer taking said gauge
shall leave a notice to that effect at the office
of the superintendent of the said water works ,
within one hour.
Section 3. Before allowing any bill for the
payment of water the Council shall examine
the report aforesaid and should it appear that
fhe stand-pipe has not contained the requisite
number otpfeet of water , in allowing an such
bill the Council shall dduct from aid bill one
day's pay for each day's failure aforesaid , and
a failure for any part of a day shall constitute
a day's failure.
Section 4. That in the measurement of
sprinklers and nozzles under the contract
aforesaid , they shall make such measurement
at an tie upon notice to chairman of the
water committee of the Council and the part
applying for lawnsprinkler's , on premises -
ises where used ansuch uremnt be
I based on the minimum amount of water kept
J in said stand-pipe ; and no charge for excess
shall be made until so measured.
Section 5. In case of any fire and upon the
ringing of the fire bell , all the private hydrants
shall be closed and remain closed while the
fire is in progress. And any person who shall
violate any of the provisions and requirements
of this section shall he deemed guilty of a
misdemeanor and upon conviction thereof
shall be fined not more than $25.00 and stand
committed to the city jail until such fine and
costs are paid.
