George Laverty returned to Pond
Creek , Oklahoma , last week , after a
short business visit here.
W. H. Welty , formerly agent at Pin-
neo , Colorado , is helping in the Sheridan -
dan , Wyoming , office now.
Supt. Phelan of the Wyoming division
has bought him a plow and will experiment -
ment in sub-soil cultivation , the coming
season.
Conductor Beal was fitted out with a
new freight crew and way car , Tuesday.
In fact the freight crew business is distinctly -
tinctly looking up.
B. & M. Yardmaster Holbrook undertook -
took to butt a box car off the track , last
Sunday and suffered a severe bruise over
the eye that will take skill and careful
nursing to heal-Hastings Democrat.
V. M. McCardy of McCook , a former
Curtis railroad boy , was renewing old
acquaintance the first of the week , Mr.
McCardy is now located at McCook as
engineer on the main line.-Curtis En-
terprise.
J. Noyce , an employe of the B & M.
at this place , was married to Miss T.
Brunswick at Indianola , Saturday. They
returned home in the evening. Wednesday -
day night they were serenaded by the
tin can and cow bell brigade.-Arapahoe
Pioneer.
According to a German authority the
total length of railroad lines in the
world is about 1oo6ooo miles of which
540,000 miles are in America alone , and
to the United States there are about
4ooooo miles , which is the greatest in
any one country ,
Conductor Odell had the misfortune
to lose a fine little driving horse , last
Sunday. Himself and wife were return-
rig from visiting relatives out in Perry
precinct. At George Poh's farm the
animal stumbled and fell , breaking its
shoulder , and in consequence had to be
killed. They had the pleasure and exercise -
ercise of a walk to the city from the
'oh farm.
Eliphalet Holbrook , sometimes called
'Shorty , " a B. & M. switchman , came
near being killed in the yards , Sunday.
In attempting to jump on an engine he
missed the mark and was thrown vie
ently against it , the force being such
hat he was thrown back and away from
he engine and thus escaped a violea :

The time card for the Burlington ex-
ension to Billings has already been
made up by General Passenger Agent
Francis. Through sleepers and chair
ars will run through from Omaha with
eservations for Helena and Portland.
Trains for Edgemont , Hot Springs and
Deadwood will run the same as at pres-
nt. A train will leave Lincoln in the
vening and arrive at Billings at 9:35 the
cat night. A returning train will leave i
Billings at 1o p. m , and arrive in Lincoln

Mr. J , E , Sanborn , a popular railroad
ngineer , who makes his headquarters
n this city , affords a very reasonable
lustration of how an economical and
nterprising man can prosper in Ne-
raska. Mr. Sanborn is a typical Yan-
ee gentleman , having left his native
ome in New Hampshire some years
go and settled in this state. He has
ways since coming here enjoyed a lu-
rative positron with the B. & M. , and
highly esteemed by his employers and
11 the employes of his acquaintance.
has a most beautiful farm near the
ourishing town of Haigler , consisting 2
L I6o acres , which with the exception of
acres is well irrigated , and yields
undantly despite the severe drouth. H
is very proud of his farm , and well
e may be , for it bids fair to make him
fortune 1n due time. This year his J

amer. Mr. Sanborn holds the throttle
his favorite engine , while his tenant

arvests ten acres of potatoes yielding
25 bushels per acre , and selling readily E
from 75 cents to $1 per bushel. He

wheat ; one thousand bushels of oats
