Chris Olpsen of Wisner , was a passenger - enger on the steamship City of Chica go , that met with trouble near Kins- ' dale Hea/I , Ireland. He was rescued by the life boat brigade , pursued his journey to Norway and is now "homo again from a foreign shore. " The receipts of cattle in South Omaha from January 1 to September 15 were 473,980 ; hogs , 1,204,188 ; sheep , 117,060 ; horses and mules , 9,050 ; showing a gain of 109,025 cat tle , a gain of 175,426 hogs , a gain of 10,219 sheep , of 4,513 horses and mules as compared with 1891. Phelps county is enjoying a stupendous deus real estate boom. Land is chang ing hands every day at big prices. The corner stone of the new Swedish Lutheran church at Oakland was put in place last Sunday , according to the established customs of the church. Charley Endsley , for twenty years a resident of Cheyenne county , has been declared insane. Twelve years ago he shot a cowboy in a quarrel about cattle , since which time the matter has preyed on his mind until the bal ance wheel dropped out and reason deserted its throne. Editor John Macrone. over eierhtv years old , passed through Omaha the other day on his way to Chicago to attend the World's fair. He had walked all the way from John Day , Oregon , 'and proposes lo go through on foot if his boots hold out. He will then write a book. He left his home in Oregon. July 4 , and is making pretty good time for a boy. The Nebraska state fair was a great success this year. Secretary Furnas said he spoke for good weather and ho got it , and everybody was pleased. ' The Lnt Days of Pompeii" was vis ited by ih iiisands. The decorations made bythc merchants were creditable and many windows displayed unique designs und was admired by all. Supreme Commander Pierce , as sisted by A. J. Wright , instituted lled- rkk lodge at Tecumseh , Neb. , Septem ber 2d with about lifty charter mem bers , with the following officers : J. T. Hedriok. This lodge will soon be one of the largest in the juris diction as the members are enthusias tic in getting new members. Fraternal orders- , based on. right principles , having for their object the betterment of mankind , are recognized by all right-thinking men as useful adjuncts in an intelligent community , to good order , social happiness and healthful progress. The feature of secrecy is necessary to detect or pre vent imposition which designing per sons seek to perpetrate on such orders , and to secure and maintain the benifi- cent objects which constitute their distinction , aims and purposes. It cannot be gainsaid that organizations of this kind , which teach the value of those cardinal virtues that underlie a sterling character and are a passport to lives of usefulness , and which com mand respect wherever found , are highly beneficial to society and consti tute a prominent factor in our best civilization. Such orders have multi plied in recent years by the score , and as long as the weakness , the selfishness and follies of human nature remain among men , so long will these organ izations be necessary and serve a be neficent purpose. A snqtr rain and sleet storm which set in las nigtit ad'ded a heavy wind to its var iety , and an unprecedented storm pro vailed. From the meagre reports ob tained it is shown that the storm i general in Colorado and parts of Utah All communication by telegraph with towns in Colorado , and also parts o Utah , was interrupted. In Denver signs were blown down , cornices torn off and hundreds of tree * either up rooted or split by the wind. Sevora persons were hit by flying objects , bu far as is learned , no fatalities occurred Probably the greatest damage was done by the falling of electric light and street car trolley wires , for at leas a dozen horses wore killed by being struck by live wires. The electric cars on many lineg are at a standstill , and people living in the suburbs are forced to get home the best they may. Investigating Once Morn. LINCOLN , . Nob. , Oct. 13 Yesterday afternoon the state board of public lands and buildings commenced anew the investigation of charges involving certain transactions of officers and em ployes at the Lincoln hospital for the insane. There were present Land Commissioner Humphrey , Secretary Allen and State Treasurer Hill. Mr. Humphrey , aa chairman , of the board , presided over the court. The time of the session was kiken up in listening to testimony till a late hour , when an adjournment was taken until today. Death of Mrs. Ullum. GANDY , Nob.Oct. 13. The people of this community were greatly shocked over the death of Mrs. S. B. Ullum , who died at her homo in Logan pre cinct last Sunday. Mrs. Ullnm gave birth to triplets October 4th. One died , the other two are liriog and doing will. LINCOLN , Neb. . Oct. 13. The twenty-seventh annual session of the the grand lodge Nebraska I. O. G. T. was called to order at 10 a. m. yester day in the hall of Lincoln lodge No. 35 , at 1519 O street , by Grand Chief Templar F. G. Odoll. About 150 dele gates , representing about seventy lodges , are in attendance. No Jury Yot. LINCOLN , Neb. , Oct. 13. The third day of the Irvine trial was as devoid of features as was the second , the rou tine of ascertaining whether or not the gentlemen summoned as jurors had formed or expressed any opinion as to the guilt or innocence of the ac cused.
