By F. M. KIMMELL. THE democratic Xiiucoln Herald avers that the late democratic con vention was seduced under prom ise of marriage by the liquor men. Well , Gal ; the republican party will impose the penalty against se duction next month , say about the 4th prox. THE McKinley tariff bill went into effect Monday and contrary to the predictions of the free trader the earth still swung onward in its course without a wabble. The sun may be expected' to rise this morn ing on schedule time and the stars will continue to sing together in their old positions in the celestial choir. THE post mortem examination of the body of a girl who recently died at Hemingtou , in this state , confirmed the diagnosis of the local physician of obstruction of the stomach. A large chunk of chew ing gum had wedged into the pass age between the stomach and the intestines. The girl was a con firmed chewer and was in the hab it of swallowing the quids. This should be a warning. SEVERAL democratic newspapers in the state appear to. be fearful that Mr. Wahlquists's name and candidacy will be lost in the shuf fle of the campaign , and they beg that he be not forgotten. The democratic state central committee Lave , no doubt , Mr. Wahlquist's Jiame on the list of candidates , but it might be well enough to jog its memory just before election to in sure his name on the ticket as a matter of form. But seriously , wouldn't Mr. "Wahlquist be just as well if not better pleased after election if his name and candidacy should be forgotten. , Omaha Bee. ROSEWATEU , in his speech at Grand Island , while endeavoring to prove that prohibition hurt busi ness , referred to the empty busi ness houses in DesMoines. He forgot that he had an empty busi ness house of four stories on the principal street in Omaha , Farnam , which has been empty for about a year and a half , and that he has a large number of empty rooms in IiismagnificentBee building , where all of the modern conveniences are to be found. This , in Omaha , which is surging forward with such gigantic headway that business places of all lands should be in constant demand. ' 'It is a fact , " said a lounger in the republican headquarters yester day , "that there is an understand ing between Boyd and Powers whereby Powers is to get the oil inspectorship in case lie can hole < enough republican alliance vote to elect the head of the democratic ticket. It was first proposed to give Powers the place of bank ex aminer , but he insisted on the oi inspectorship , and that is the wa it stands now. Powers , of'course liasn't the ghost of a show of elec tion. All of his democratic follow ers are to vote for Boyd , and now .his only chance to get anything out of the deal is to induce the re publican members of the alliance to cling to his forlorn hope. Nice scheme , but it won't work. The irepubliean farmers know too much to let him deliver them over to the democrats in that style. " THE opposition of other labor organizations to the Knights of labor in New York will hasten the dissolution of that once mighty union of workingmen. The condi tion of the order in the Empire state is a reflex of its condition -elsewhere. Disintegration set in the moment politicians were admit- ied to its rank. Thousands of po litical tricksters , whose friendship ± or labor was measured by the votes in sight , were permitted to dictate : its plans and policies , and sacrifice its well-being for their personal advancement. Whether the order will survive mismanagement and /dictatorial recklessness remains to 3be seen. It is passing through the fires , and may emerge free from the pdliticalbarnacles and wreckers. In any event the cause .of organiz ed labor will be benefitted. Other , nd broader organizations are al ready rising from the ruins , strengthened by the experience of the Knights , and managed by men who will not attempt to rule the world. Such a result will bring nbout a close alliance among all labor organizations and harmonize ihe radical difference now existing Jbetween kindred orders. Bee.
