The Campaign. -
The campaign is now begun. The conven
tions which are to name the political candi- _
dates are at hand and the many aspirants to
public offices bard at work. Now is the time
to ( be cautious about blunders which may re
sult in binding the hands of the conventions
and forcing upon them the nomination of unV
fit persons , thus crippling the administration Y
of public affairs. The approach of political
conventions generally brings up a lot of
cranks who viewing themselves through the
magnifying glass of self-conceit , get big ideas
of : their qualities and see * by fair or foul /
means to get named and elected to public
positions < where they may display their folly
and become the prey of failure and retire in
disgrace j , wishing they had never taken such
an ] unlucky step. It is one thing to be elected .
office but quite another to fill that office. I
Let us be wide-awake and get not only good
and ' honorable men but men of intelligence ,
sound judgment and ability , who when they _
appear in the halls of legislature or in other
offices of trust , will be an honor to their con- _
stituents. One thing which recommends Hon. f
GL. . Laws to our unanimous suffrage is thatL
< has never sought the offices which he has
ilready filled so faithfully , they came to him
the natural consequence of his valuable
labors and tokens of appreciation of the
"
people. He stands-as a matchless example
for all the politicians to follow. Those are the
men we need in office. Reporter.
