There will bo no uneasiness or dissat
isfaction manifested in the Second dis
trict as long as "our Jim" is getting
well , and seeks quiet. His constituents
will be content to wait patiently and
hopefully for his recovery. In the
meantime let no understrapper step in
and try to assume the sick congress
man's prerogatives. Let Jim rest , , and
then let his nurse and slop bucket at
tendant devote his time to his special
duties , and give Jim's constituents a

A WEDDING of more than ordinary
interest has been performed in Fort
Wayne , Ind. , by'Squire France. The
gronm , Aurelia Payne , is past seventy ,
while the bride , Miss Alice Coleman , is
scarcely nineteen years of age. Mr.
Payne has an enviable reputation in the
matrimonial line. He has been married
eight times , has buried six wives , was
divorced from the seventh and now the
eighth , a blooming maid , lolls peacefully
in his experienced arms. Payne does
not consider marriage an absolute fail
ure. '
Secretary Blaine has returned to
his desk in the state department , and
the dispatchers report that he looked
Wjpll , showing no traces of his recent ill
ness. Incidental to his return to duty
was the formal presentation to the presi
dent of the new British minister. There
has doubtless been a great deal of exag
geration regarding the physical condi
tion of Mr. Blaine , whose prostration
was due , doubtless , simply to the strain
of official duties , which has been some
what severe ever since he went into the
state department.
A compulsory education bill has
just been passed by the New York as
sembly. The measure is significant in
that it provides severe penalties for the
neglect of parents and guardians to pro
vide for the proper education of child-
red in their charge. A feature of the
law which commends itself is that it
provides for officers whose duty it is to
look out for truants. It remains to be
seen , however , whether the enforcement
of school attendance is practical in this
country , especially in rural districts
where the population resides chiefly on
farms.
The last item of news from the lab
oratory is that the deadliest of bacteria
live and multiply on the bank notes
that we handle. Probably there is not
a viler article that we ever touch than
a bank note. Garried in the pockets of
the most leprous and loathsome , it
passes through the pocket of the refin
ed. We would not think of taking a
pocket handkerchief that had made any
such round without washing and fumi
gating. We would not be induced to
put on the shirt of a tramp , but the
money of the diseased and contaminat
ing goes without a thought into our in
ner pockets. What disease we hug we
do not think or care.
The indictment of the officers of an
Illinois insane asylum for killing an in
mate by the exercise of savage cruelty
may have u humanizing influence on a
number of similar institutions elsewhere
for ninety days or possibly six months ,
[ t is a curious and not a creditable fact
that such places will seldom bear the
light of investigation. Judging by past
uxperience , if all concerns of the kind
in the country could be simultaneously
turned inside ont , seventy-five per cent ,
sf them would shame human nature.
How unfortunate that the most help
less creatures in the civilized world ,
ind the ones who have the strongest
3laims upon our commiseration , should
ae exposed to the greatest measure of
tnisery because of the tiger tendencies
) f irresponsible power.

papers are the mirrors of public and
private life. In form and contents they

press of Nebraska is unsurpassed by any
state in the union of equal population.
Active , vigorous , enterprising , cleanly

ind weekly papers reflect the progress
md prosperity of the people. Alwa's
eading and guiding public affairs , vigi-
ant in local concerns , and energetic in
lefense of local interests. , they are truly
"maps of busy life , its fluctuations and
ts vast concerns. "

perhaps from the habit of local self gov
ernment. If the streets are not well
lighted or if one ' s horse stumbles over
mill kept pavement , the natural impulse
is to complain of it to evevy one we
meet and to write about it in the local
newspaper. Instead of putting only
jur strong points forward , we are al
ways ready to discus * our weakest-side ,
rhis must always be remembered in
ligeating the criticisms of Englishmen.
