Messrs. Cundiff , Peters and Elliott unearthed

uicd them. Alvin Benjamin , while hiding
near mo den hoping to get n shot at the old
ones , heard another young one and captured

Mr. nenry Lieb , treasurer elect of Decatur
county , Kas. , and wife , whoretnrned recently
trom an extended visit to relatives and friends
in the east , wero suddenly recalled by a tele
gram announcing tho death of Mrs. Lieb's
father. Judge Hull of Boone , Iowa.
Friend Huff met with quite a serious acci
dent recently. Ho was holding a revolver in
one hand had tho forefinger of the other hand
over the muzzle , in making a sudden move
ment the revolver wti3 discharged , the ball en
tering his linger near tho hand and glancing
up to the second joint , passed through the
joint. He wanted the linger amputated , fear
ing it would become stiff and useless , but was
prevailed upon to allow it to remain.
The Irish-Americans of New York city met in
Clarendon Hall , on tho night of the completion
of the Democratic ticket at St. Louis , and com
pounded the following bitter pill for the Dem
ocratic throat :
"Whereas , tho Democratic national conven
tion has renominated Grover Cleveland for the
presidency , endorsed his administration and
approved his free-trade message ; and
Whekeas , Mr. Cleveland's administration
has been lackingin ail the qualities that in our
judgment should characterize a good Ameri
can government , lias sacrificed the interests
ot the public to the demands ol foreign powers
on every occasion in whichnegotiations in
volving such interests were carried on , nota
bly in toe base surrender of tho rights of
American fishermen , and in tho extradition
treaties with England , and is now aiding the
efforts of foreign manufacturers and traders
to enrich themselves at the expense of Amer
ican industry and labor ; and
Wiieueas , the election ef Grover Cleveland
under such circumstances and in view of such
tendencies would , in our opinion , be a calami
ty inflicting lasting injury on tho industrial
lite of the nation , and on the republic among
tho governments and peoples of the earth ;
therefore ,
Resolved , That we , citizens of Irish birth
or descent , who have hitherto mainly acted
with the Democratic party , who know from our
own experience the immense superiority of
the American industrial system , built up and
fostered by a protective tariff , over that or
England , who have special knowledge of the
tieacherous and invidious churacterof those at
whose instigation and in whose interest tho
free trade , a so-called tariff reform movement ,
is carried on in this country , and whose dear
est inteiests and natural sympathies of blood
and kindred have been wounded by the action
of the Cleveland administration in its relations
with England in matters where ourtrue Amer
ica interest was at stake , denounce the nomi
nation of Grover Cleveland as a menace to the
best interests of the American people , and we
pledge ourselves to uue every honorable
means to prevent his election.
Resolved , That while reserving to our
selves entire freedom qf action in local affairs ,
we pledge to the repuhJi < fan party our hearty
and energetic support jmljthc presidential con
test , if , as we sincerely lippe it will , the nation
al convention of that pAfty will adopt a plat
form advocating protection to American in
dustry and labor and will select a candidate
Known to be a sound protectionist , whose
views on home and foreign affairs will be a

ed by a broad and comprehensive American
spirit , aiming to mako American ideas and
American influences and American industries
dominant on the broad continent , instead of
yielding to the intrigues and imitating the
weakly methods of effete European monarch

THE OTHER SIDE.
Mn. Editor : We noticed in your last issue
an article in regard to tho so-called indigna-
tionmeotingatVailton , signed by "Observer. "
Now wo think that these observations were
taken from a distance as we were present at
that meeting and know that ' • Observer" made
several misstatements. In the first place , it
was not an indignation meeting ; but simply a
meeting or about twenty-live of the neighbors
of Messrs. Kolb and Esher , ( all of them with
perhaps oue exception living nearer than our
friend "Observer , " ) for the purpose of con
sidering the trouble existing between those
parties and trying to devise some means of ef
fecting a peaceable settlement of the same.
"Observer" seems to think itery strange
that any of these neighbors would ever forget
any trouble that they might have had with
Mr. Kolb. We think that no one who attend
ed that meeting ever had any set ious trouble
with Mr. Kolb , and if they did is it the unpar
donable sin tor any one to have trouble with
him and become reconciled ? As far as the
shooting is concerned wo know but very little
about it , as it happened several years ago ; but
we understand , that it was done in self-defence
and that the trouble arose because Mr. Kolb
was not willing that his crop should be de
stroyed by another man's stock. But we do
know that he had atrial and was cleared. "Ob
server" states that Mr. Esher was at tho hos
pital in Omaha for treatment. We understand
that he went as a witness against Mr. Kolb in
the U. S. court tor having cut a load of willows
011 land upou which he had a pre-emption fil
ing. The annoyances as Bpoken of by "Ob.
server" consisted in Mr. Esher's cows being
picketed in Mr. Kolb's door yard. He ( Kolb )
of course turned them loose and may have
set hi3 dog on them ( the cows ) not the child
ren. Perhaps , as stated by "Observer , " Mr.
Esher did say too much and go too far , as their
difficulties invariably occurred in Mr. Kolb's
door yard. Now as to laying one straw's
weigh ( as charged by "Observer" ) to the bur
dens of Mis. Esher , wo deny that this has been
done. On the contrary as Mr. Kolb has since
moved off the place and Mr. Esher has peace
able possession we will now allow thepubllc to
decide whether or not all sympathy has been
withdrawn and as to who has been wronged or
