Culbertson. " We will be generous with
you , Bert , and place it at 600.
A spfcial to the Inter Ocean from
Cedar Rapids , Iowa , says : Sheriffs
and other county officials in 75 coun
ties report prohibition successful. There
are no open saloons in about three-
fourths of the counties. Drunkenness
decreased 75 per cent , and crime has
also decreased. The law is gaining fa
vor.
The registration books of Leaven
worth , Kansas , have been closed and
show the names of 4,318 men and 2 , -
G73 women as voters. Two hundred of
the leading women have organized them
selves into an "election committee , "
and they propose to show the world what
women can accomplish at the ballot
box under the new law ,
The inter-state commerce law , as in
terpreted by trunk lines and the Cen
tral Traffic association , abolishes all
commissions heretofore allowed agents
on tickets to the agents in different
parts of the country. This will make a
difference in their income of from $50
to $500 per month. Commissions have
cost the railways annually § 5,000,000.
Omaha Bee.
On Friday last a train of twelve cars
heated by steam from the locomotive
was run from Portland , Me. , to Lake
Maranacook and back to Portland , a
distance of 120 miles. The speed of
the train was not retarded , and a tem
perature of SO degrees was maintained
even in the rear car throughout the run.
In the face of such a successful practi
cal test as this , what justification can
there be for the retention of the coal
stove ?
John Garrett , in a recent speech ,
is reported to have said that if the Lord
had told Adam on the day that He
breathed the breath of life into him that
He would give him $25,000 a year for
taking care of the garden , and Adam
had kept his job and drawn his salary
regularly until now , he would not have
drawn as large a sum as Win. K. Yan-
derbilt left at his death. Commenting
upon this statement , and to show how
interest can get away with wage earn
ing , the Dubuque , la. , Times says :
"Had Adamwhile , living in the garden ,
found one of our big copper cents and
placed it at compound interest with satan
or the serpent at G per cent. , he would
have more money coming to him than
there is on the face of the globe. "
Let us look for a moment at the news
paper chronic faultfinder. Suppose a
newspaper man , every time he hears of
a man who severely criticises him or his
paper in public , should retaliate by
holding up to the public gaze the faults
and shortcomings of said faultfinder ,
what would be the result ? Why , the
criticizer would think himself terribly
outraged and would thirst for the edi
tor's gore. Then the poor quill driver
would get shot or shoot somebody.
That patient beast of burden , the coun
try journalist , never does this except
under great provocation. It isn't be
cause he is afraid to do it , but because
he isn't mean enough. He allows men
to go around trying to destroy his busi
ness. He hears his paper called a worth
less sheet because its editor in doing
his duty stepped on somebody's toes.
Such worthless scoundrels should re
ceive no mercy at the hands of the
