j Daniel Webster said , < CI know no
' South , no North , no East , no "West. "
1 President Cleveland would modify it by
saying , "I know nothing west of Buf
falo. "
The Omaha Herald kindly advises
' • Brother Sparks , of Washington , to
take his tiny boom to a butcher-shop
and swap it for brains. " This is good
Democratic advice.
Judge Fontaine Fox is the prohibi
tion candidate for governor of Ken
tucky. He characterizes the ticket he
heads as the best one , morally and in
tellectually , ever offered Kentuckians.
As it will go a little hard with the
press out West to pay railroad fare ,
how would it do for the newspapers to
chip in and buy the B. & 0. , and two
or three other connecting lines West.
and South ?
It won't be long now until the poor ,
oppressed husband will have blisters on
his hands from holding to a fishing-
pole , while his tyrannical wife will be
staying at home having fun with the
spade in the garden.
The New York World asseverates
that "the collection of $10,000,000 a
month of excessive revenue is an outra
geous abuse of power. The principle of
"no taxation without representation" is
not more fundamental than that of no
taxation without a public necessity. "
Alfred Sully is spoken of as the
new giant in the railroad world. The
grasp of a Napoleon and the executive
adroitness of a William of Orange are
some of the qualities ascribed to him.
The Richmond Terminal and B. & O.
consolidation is said to be his handy
work.
The theory of the New York Sun is
that neither Cleveland nor Blaine will
be nominated. This theory will prove
to be correct. Sherman will be the
republican nominee and David Bennett
Hill the democratic nominee. And Sher
man will win. The republican ticket
will be Sherman and Allison. The dem
ocrat ticket will be Hill and Voorhees.
We are not regularly in the prediction
line , but this goes as an amateur start
er. Republican.
No one will blame Mr. Cleveland if
he remove Brother Sparks with a reas
onable degree of celerity. As a private
citizen Sparks was ponderously viva
cious. As Sparks , L. C , he was a
bore and a nuisance , always promptly
threatening the title of some quarter
section squatter , and droningly investi
gating the fradulent claim of some mil
lion-acre usurper. As a politician he
has proven himself as disloyal to his
chief as he is incompetent as a land
commissioner. That Mr. Hill is far
too shrewd a man to be led into nego
tiations with Sparks for the formation
of a presidential ticket of Hill and
Sparks goes without saying. That
Sparks should have been base enough to
propose it is a little surprising. It was
admitted that he was a sham as a re
former ; it was not suspected that he
was a sneak as a politician. Mr. Cleve
land should lose no time in informing
Mr. Sparks that while he may never be
V. P. , he can at once consider that he
has the G. II.
Knowing ones in railroad circles say
that the forthcoming election of a new
board of directors of the Union Pacific
railway , which occurs the 28th inst. ,
will again place the road into the hands
of New York parties. Like ever1 other
change in this management , in years
past , it is to be expected that the line
officials will suffer a general shaking up.
When Sydney Dillon , representing New
York capital , retired , and was succeed
ed by Charles Francis Adams , there
was a complete reorganization. Thos.
L. Kimball , traffic manager , who has
for years been the recognized represen
tative of New York bond-holders has
been noticeably under a cloud ever since
he was removed from the position of as
sistant general manager , in the days of
S. H. H. Clark. In the event of the
accession of the New York people it is
predicted that a greater over-turning of
officials all along the line will take
place. The general anxiety manifested
in these parts is not wholly without
foundation. Bee ,
