J The roller-skate is now booming in j Mexico , and the halls of the Montezu- mas are open to invasion. There is one source of comfort , this cold weathor the coal combination cannot corner the ice crop. "Sole-ar eclipses are of frequent oc currence on the front door-steps of men with marriageable daughters. " The Prohibition wave continues at the South. The Tennessee Legislature by a very large majority has passed a prohibitory amendment to be submitted to the people. In the House the vote stood 87 for to 4 against. The principal occupation and highes-t aim of the Indiana legislature seems to be pugilistic attainment and excellence. Knock-downs and drag-outs - were re- chcrche in their legislative halls , last week. O , temporal The gas and water pipes now being laid at Vienna are made of paper. The sheets are .saturated with asphalt and lined as they are rolled into shape with an insoluble enamel. They are only half an inch in thickness but will stand any amount of pressure. ftwinim This silly and ostensibly facetious squib is being industriously and gener ously bunded around by the state press. It is supDosed to be a humorous re flection on one of the finest bands in Nebraska : "JlcCook's now band goes outside the cor poration to practice , and their efforts are highly appreciated In consequence. " In order to make a good town , we should have grit , push , snap , vim , energy , churches , schools , morality , en terprise , harmony , advertising , cordiality , cheap property , healthy location , good country tributary. Then talk about it , speak well of it , help to improve it , ad vertise in aiTd read the town papers , patronize the merchants , help all pub lic enterprising citizens and be one of them yourself and remember that every dollar invested in permanent improve ments is that much to your interest. "How styles have changed since I was a girl , " writes an old lady to the Louisville Post. { , When I was young , " she continues , "we used to wear our dresses up to the neck and gloves with only one button. Now they wear the gloves up to the neck and only one but ton on the dress. I don't see how a woman can retain her modesty or be in- natelj refined if she goes in the presence of men bare nearly to the waist. Such costumes may be all very well for the ballet and for prize ring fighters , but it is demoralizing for young women. My time is nearly up , t - < . _ really would like to come back into this world in sixty or seventy years from now , just to see how women will dress. If they keep on reducing the extent of their clothes at the same rate thev have in the last half century , they won't have much of anything on by that time. " The trade dollar is at last to be re deemed in payment of dues to the Unit ed States or in exchange for standard dollars , the House having passed the Senate bill. There are believed to be j about 7,000,000 of them that will be presented. The time of redemption is limited to six months. The trade dol lar was originally coined for purpose of foreign trade , and was given a legal tender quality in this country , but it was long since deprived of the legal tender quality , and has ceased to serve the purpose for which it was designed. • The total number coined was 35.0G5 , - 924. Of this number 29,004,604 were exported , 1,500,000 were probably ta ken abroad bv Chinese returning to' ' their homes , and 500,000 were remelt- . ed at the United States mint As 2 , - 574,712 are reported by custom houses ' to have been brought back into the United States , it is estimated by the j directors of the mint that the number j at present in this country is about 7 , - J 026,732. j Beggs' Cherry Cough Syrup o Will relieve that cough almost instantly and make expectoration easy.
