As an example of "Jeffersonian
simplicity" we might suggest the fact
that Secretary and Mrs. Whitney re
pose on a $10,000 bedstead.
THE nest profit on a keg of beei
sold by the glass is 250 per cent , of the
net cost. This pretty nearly equals
the Dutchman's 2 per cent.
WE hereby acknowledge the receipt
of a number of pub. docs , from Con
gressman Weaver of the "big first , "
touching the inter-state commerce bill.
CONGRESSMAN KEID of North Caro
lina is in a peck of financial trouble ,
through some grave irregularities in
money matters , and has flown to the
rogue's paradise over the line Canada.
THE United States Senate still pre
fers "ways that are dark" or language
to that effect. They have decided to
continue the "secret session" nonsense ,
with its air of suppositious importance
and owl-like mystery.
ANOTHER of the boodlers , ex-Alder
manMcQuade of New York City , has
been convicted and goes to join Jaehne
in Sing Sing. The Judge thought that
seven years imprisonment and a fine of
$5,000 about met the exigencies of
the case.
" ! P men acquire whiskey livers , wo
men acquire corset livers. The corset
changes the whole shape of the liver ,
and one feminine liver has been found
cut in two. Both whiskey livers and
corset livers are destructive of human
life , but there are people who will have
them. "
THE Pennsylvania railroad company
is having constructed for the limited
express trains a number of elegant
sleeping , drawing-room , dining and
smoking cars , with all the modern con
veniences and improvements. Lunch
counters , barber-shop and bath-rooms
will be special features of these new
cars.
THE rum sellers of the Buckeye
State have had another nail driven into
their coffin , in the affirmation by the
Supreme Court of Ohio , of the consti
tutionality of the Dow liquor law , the
three republican members of the Su
preme Court affirming , the two bourbon
members dissenting. This definitely
fixes the status of the liquor question
in Ohio , and is a signal victory for
temperance. Long may she wave !
THE South Carolina legislature has
made it a misdemeanor to sell , give
away , or otherwise dispose of liquor ,
malt or spirituous , in Laurene or An
derson districts of that state. One
man cannot treat another to a drink in
his own house. The penalty is one
year's imprisonment for any violation
of the law , which , among other things ,
provides that MO citizen of either one of
the districts shall have liquor of any
kind shipped to him.
B eggs' Cherry Cough Syrup
Will relieve that cough almost instantly
and make expectoration easy. Acts sinml-
fcmeotisly on the bowels , kidneys and liver ,
thereby relieving the lungs of that soreness
and pain and also stopping that tickling
sensation in the throat by removing the
cause. One trial of it will convince any one
that it has no equal on earth for coughs and
colds. McMillen & Weeks have secured the
sale of it and will guarantee everv bottle to
give satisfaction.
