that the nest president of the United
States will be the nominee of the Na

THE Dallas ( Texas ) News , asks :
"What shall it profit a president if he
gains a whole world of Muwnmps and
lose his own party ? " It is very evi
dent that the president has been ask
ing himself the same question.
LINCOLN is said to be the most relig
ious city in the state. It is only fair
to state , however , that she gained this
reputation before Will Jay commenced
to write the "Topics of the Times" in
the State Journal. Gazette-Journal.
A NEW party has been born in the
United States , a party of principles ,
composed of the brain and brawn and
muscle of the country. Many names
have been suggested for this child of
progress and we will add another to the
list. , Let it be called the INDUSTRIAL
PARTY. The Truth.
THE New York Sun , speaking of
Land Commissioner Sparks' report ,
says : "Why should the government
be called to bear the expense of pub
lishing a lot of personal trash that is
of no possible use to any one aside from
the Commissioner himself ? " The Sun
don't know Sparks. He imagines he
is the government.
CALLED to the presidency under cir
cumstances that aroused a prejudice
against him even among members of
his own party , Mr. Arthur proved one
of the best presidents this country has
ever had. He was , first of all , a gen
tleman in evers sense of the word. Un
der him the White House became fa
mous for its hospitality , and was in
every sense the social center of the
Union. In every relation in which he
was thrown , Mr. Arthur proved him
self hospitable , courteous , considerate
to all. But he was more than this. He
was throughout the patriotic American ,
recognizing party obligations , it is true ,
but thoroughly patriotic , free from nar
row partisanand sectional prejudice ,
and the president of the whole country.
