THE saloon is in politics this year ,
assessments , money and all , more earn
estly than ever before in the history of
the state.
THE great campaign issues in Tennes
see seem to be very small indeed , only
the difference between fiddle-dee-dee
and fiddle-dee-dum.
DBS MOINES , la , is threatened with
an ice famine. Druggists are put to
much inconvenience in procuring enough
to carry on their business. It requires
a great deal of ice to supply an Iowa
druggist this year.
Ax Upton , Ky. , couple were recent
ly married in haste on the Indiana side
whose elopement smacked of novelty.
The groom especinnt drove to his
sweetheart's residence in a huckster
wagon , in the rear of which was a chick
en coop. While he proceeded to in
terview the old gentleman with a view
to securing the daughter's hand in
marriage , the latter slipped out to the
wagon and climbed into the chicken
coop. When the old man refused , the
young lover said : "All right , I didn't
want her anyhow. " Her absence was
soen discovered , and the couple had a
lively time in escaping pursuit and
dodging a benediction of bullets. As
they showed the true stuff of Kentuck-
ians , they have returned home and
been forgiven.
THE hauling down of the American
flag on the schooner Marion Grimes in
Shelburne harbor by Captain Quigley ,
of the Dominion cruiser , was a mistake
which has greatly disturbed the gov
ernment of Ottawa. The schooner
had not been seized for a violation of
the fisheries law , but was detained for
omission to report before leaving the
harbor. But Captain Landry , of the
schooner , made a mistake also. At the
request of Captain Quigley he hauled
down his flag when he was notified that
the vessel was under detention , but af
terward , remembering that it was his
birthday , ran it up again , and refusing
to lower it , Captain Quigley did it for
him. One mistake may offset the
other and let the Canucks out of an
embarrassing dilemma. Bee.
THE railroad companies have found
from sad experience that there is much
difference in the quality of steel rails.
The Chicago , Burlington & Quincy
railroad company wants to buy 20.000
tons for 1887 , but it wants the rails
made ol material in which there is 20
per cent , of charcoal iron , and in addi
tion it wants a five-year guarantee of
the wearing quality , and it wants to de
cide for itself whether the rails fill
the conditions required. The late ? .Ir.
Yanderbilt bought English rails and
paid the tariff on them , because they
would outwear those of American make.
The steel mills in this country are
turning out a better quality of rails in
consequence of larger experience. They
find that they must have proper ores ,
and the eastern mills are using large
quantities of foreign ores in making
their Bessemer pig.
Watch for it ! The first symptom of true
croup Is hoaiveness , and if Chamberlain's
Cough Remedy is freelv given at once and
the do es frequently repeated , the dread dis
ease may be entirely prevented and all dan
ger and anxiety avoided. Sold by Willey &
