TROUSERS will be worn a little long er , this autumn , if the 20,000 cutters go out on strike. AN effort will be made to get an in stantaneous phoiograph of Democratic harmony , to see what it looks like. , THERE are about seven Anarchists who will soon have as much rope as they will have any use for in this world. THE picnic and the circus season are simultaneously drawing to a close. Congress , however , will not open until December. THE sleek way in which old Geroni- mo slides out of a tight place , would lead one to the conclusion that he be longs to the Ohio coal oil ring. MAN is not cunning by nature. He is stupid and unsuspecting and confid ing. If he had half the meanness and stupidity that women credit him with how charming he would be in their sweet eyes. Ex. ONE of the "ups and downs" of life : "The doting mother of a waggish boy , having bottled a lot of nice preserves , labeled them , "Put up by Mrs. Doo. " Johnny having discovered the goodies , soon ate the contents of one bottle , and wrote on thebottom of the label , "Put down by Johnny Doo. " THE expression of "buying a pig in a poke , " and "letting the cat out of the bag , " came from the old practice of bringing little pigs to market in a bag , and selling them by weight with out opening the bag. Some tricky dealer substituted a cat for the pig. and the discovery of this caused the ex pression of "letting the cat out , " or a premature disclosure. "WHAT the Farmers Want , " is the title of an article in a leading New York paper , and it is made to embrace everything from a steam pump in the the kitchen to an elevated railroad in the back yard. This is peihaps an eastern demand. What western farm ers want is $1 a bushel for wheat and 60 cents for corn. Give these and they will wait for pumps and railroads. INQUIRES the New York Commercial Advertiser : "Many people think in temperance is the ' 'great National is sue ; " others claim that the vital ques tion of the day is capital and labor ; others feel that the disfranchisement of women is the crying evil of the time ; others regard social purity as the one object toward which the effort should be directed ; others insist that the rescue of civil service from the power of politicians is the overshadow ing issue , and so on. But does it fol low that each of these beliefs shall have its party , with all the machinery of candidates and platforms , and that the people shall be required to take their stand for or against the one prin ciple , oblivious to all the ordinary questions of public policy that distract mankind ? " No. But the temper of this age is such as to make it necessary for the party , desirous of receiving the suf frages of the intelligent voters to ripe above and beyond the issues of a quar ter of a century since , giand and im mortal as they were , to a conscious and active appreciation of the vital and pressing principles and issues of the day , so minutely and accurately de scribed by the Commercial Advertiser. The infusion of a few manly , moral principles into the old body politic , will accomplish much good , though it might be the death of a class of disrep utable politicians , who have eaten like a canker at her vital ? . The matter of numerousness is not so much one of parties as of men , principles , integrity , etc. THE Leavenworth Times , in giving a little fatherly advice to the editor of the Jimtown Kansan , advises him to "keep his shirt on.
