POLITICALLY speaking , it were bet
ter for the man of unsavory repute that
a millstone be hanged around his neck
and thafc he be cast into the midst of
the sea , than to be a candidate for of
fice. For presently the press , that
eternal and invincible conservator of
public and political morals , sniffs his
turpitude afar off , and lo , in the twink
ling of an eye , the mask of apparent
respectability is torn aside , and the
candidates character is shown to the

world in its true inwardness.
AN exchange figures it out tint Eus-
sian diplomacy is very like the old
doctor , who was great on fits. The
doctor's plan was , when treating a pa
tient afflicted with some unknown mal
ady , to throw him into fits , then to ap
ply his infallible "fits specific. " So
Russia in her recent treatment of Bul
garia. Precipitating an abdication by
Prince Alexander , ( who by the way has
again been enthroned ) she heroically
applied her remedy for anarchy , with
temporary results of a most satisfac
tory character.

To the careful thoughtful observer ,
the "drift of things , " the indications of
the times , must be painfully manifest.
And certain it is that "the fact is daily
growing upon public comprehension
that this country is governed by its
wealthier classes. Powerful corpora
tions and classes select the men who
make the laws , and the laws are conse
quently invariably made ir. the interest
of the rich and powerful. And more
than this , through the judicial machin- i
ery these laws , already constructed in j
these interests , are still further warped '
and twisted in that direction. " That
this is the state of affairs is possibly' '
not less notorious than the complacen-1
cy with which the people view it. Were
it not for the ignorance and compara
tive helplessness of the masses , their
supine inactivity would be well nigh '
criminal , in this regard. 'The man
who is fearless and bold and honest in
his championship of the rights of the
common people , is the center of a mer
ciless , combined attack until he is driv
en ignominiously to private life. Cor
porations and the beneficiaries of the
protective system unite to keep in con
gress a class of men upon whom they
depend to enact such laws as will en
rich them at the common expense. They
have an abundance of money to serve
their purposes. " And that they use
of their abundance to good advantage ,
is carelessly hinted at upon every hand.
While the god of mammon's handiwork
is everywhere traceable.
