IT is related of a popular clergyman
that he started a dull praying meeting
recently by announcing that he "didn't
propose to act as umpire for a sleeping
match. "
LE GRAND LAIIEW , who owns a cattle
ranch in Kansas , is visiting his parents
in Elmira , X. Y. He is six feet high ,
wears a beard that drags a foot on the
floor when he stands erect.
A LITTLE child , hearing a minister
preaching a sermon , and observing him
very vehement in his words and gestures ,
cried out : " 31other , why don't the peo
ple let the man out of the box ? "
"WAS he murdered ? " asks a startled
exchange. No , he wasn't quite , but
when he came out of a beer saloon and
met his wife at the door it came so near
scaring him to death that it would have
been a charity to murder him.
IT is said that there are 10,000 fam
ilies in Chicago without a copy of the
bible. The number without a copy of a
paper containing the latest base ball
news is much less , so the suffering is
not so great as might be supposed.

We move to amend. If there is any
person in this land of the free justly
entitled to the supreme honors of the
order , it is our own and only Tom Cat
of the South Side.
ALL dispatches are to the effect
that the senators without exception are
in raptures over Mrs. Cleveland. The
members of the house , however , do not
seem to enthuse so much. Probably
what touches the heart of the senators ,
in Mrs. Cleveland , is the fact that though
she was young and giddy , she married
an old codger like themselves. It is a
sort of flattery to the vanity stricken
veterans of the capitol. It gives 'em
all ne\v hopes that the school girls will
fall in love with them. The sad exper
iences of Jones of Florida had made
'em tolerably sick created a reaction
as it were , after the triumphs of Judge
Davis and Governor Tabor. Journal.
IT is an instructive commentary on
the absurdity of the court rules for se
lection of juries , invented by the law
yers for their own particular advantage
in trying suits before men who may be
influenced by wind rather than by testi
mony , that it appears probable that
there will not be found in all Chicago
twelve men competent to sit in judg
ment on the anarchist conspirators and
they will have to rake the whole state
for people ignorant enough to be accep
table. While we are reforming every
thing else we had better reform the
jury system by going back to the first
principles. In the beginning the men
who knew most about the accused , the
accuser and the crime were sought , nat
urally enough , for jurors. They gener
ally brought in the right sort of verdict.
THE saloon business had been boom
ing at a fearful rate at Curtis till one
da } ' , last week , Sheriff Franklin lit down
upon the joliy venders of drinks and ar
rested Chas. Saltzgiver and Chet. Sib-
betts for selling liquors without license.
The offenders were taken before Judge
Allen , at this place , and , after some of
the points in the case were presented ,
they concluded it was best to plead
guilty. Their fine was $200 and cost
( about $25) ) and there are still standing
against them about fourteen complaints
on which they can be tried at any time ,
in case they again open their traffic.
We understand that Saltzgiver was to
oe married on the night of the day on
which he was arrested. The complaints
were made by Sheriff Franklin and J.T.
Morris. Geo. II. Stewart was appoint
ed deputy district attorney , by YV. S.
Morlan , and prosecuted for the state.
W. II. Latham defended. The Faber
s glad Mr. Franklin regards it as his
duty to see that the laws of the state
are enforced. Stockville Faber.
