XnxT to the peculiar pranks of that
long-eared quadruped , iu a\ve of whose
pedal extremities all mankind stands ,
English politics is entitled to the second
rank of uncertainty. The Tory part } '
has been defeated , and the probabilities
are that Gladstone , "the "rand old man"
c
of the Liberal wing , will again be called
to form a new nrinistr } ' . Gladstone and
Parnell were too grand a combination
for the conservative government.
ACCORDING to the last issue of the
Yidette , II. C. Eider was a model hus
band and Mrs. Rider the terror in that
family. It will be news to those inti
mately acquainted with both parties to
know that Hiram C. was such a hen
pecked husband , and it will be a greater
surprise to them to hear it than it was
when they first learned that poor old
hen-pecked Hiram was skylarking
around the country with another man's
wife. Airs , llider lived a long time in
Crete where she made many friends ,
i and old Hiram himself was the first and
only one who could be found to say
ought against her. Hiram has just
about courage enough to attack a wo
man. Crete Globe.

new plan of disposing of bad debts , i
They will co-operate to have a bill auc- '
tion , and accounts which they have not
been able to collect will be sold to the
highest bidder. There are a good many
people who do not pay their debts who
would pay them if theknew that their
names and liabilities were to become
public property in the event of non
payment , and a firm enforcement of thu
Western Xew York method would prob
ably very soon render an actual auction
unnecessary. There ought to be a pre
sumption in favor of publicity in every
ca&e of wilful attempt to deprive a cred
itor of that which is justly due himand ,
nobody will object to the plan who pays j
or honestly intends to pay his debts. ? o j
it may even be adopted outside of West- \
ern Xew York. i
IT is not improbable that the disease
noticed among dogs in many parts of
the country , this winter , be it rabies or
something that simulates rabies , may
be supeiinduccd by enforced abstinence
from water. The street dog must suf
fer greatly , and it is a question , now '
that everything has been fro/en solid [
for three or four weeks , if half the dogs
that have owners and a home are not
neglected. A dog should be regularly
watered every day. It has been claim
ed that the polecat or skunk is the ani
mal that originates rabies. The polecat
goes mad in very hot and dry weather ,
presumably from thirst. His bite is
more speedily and certainly fatal than
that of a rabid dog. The "dog days , "
the hotest of the year , is the season as
signed popularly to rabies. May not
the scarcity of water suffered by out
door animals not cared for make such
a season as this winter even more pro-1
ductive of - hydrophobia than the dog I
days ? State 'Journal. I
