S3ear < 3ed Warriors.
[ St. James1 Gazette. ]
A proposal is on foot to permit tho
wearing of beards in the French army.
Should the covotjd permission bo ac
corded , it will not bo the first time that
Gallic warriors ha.vo been bearded liko
the pard. Napoleon allowed his picked
men to wear as much hair on their
iaces as they chose ; but , since his
armies were usually a mixture ofeter -
aus and raw recruits the ranks must
have presented a somewhat piebald ao-
"
pearance. During the revolution "it
was decreed that the grenadiers only
should have tho privilege of wearing a
mustache : hut no notice wa.ever takou
of the regulation.
In his earlier days , when he was con
stantly lighting fn Flanders or on tho
Ehine , the grand monarquy allowed his
mustache to grow ; but wheir ho fell un
der tho influence of Mine , do Mainte-
non , and frivolityvas severely ban
ished from tho lourt. tho kin 'and his
counselors and courtiers became as
shaven and shorn as the deathless priest
of tho nursery rhyme. Henri J was
glorious in beard and mustache , but the
mustache which has always had some
thing more romantic about it than the
prosaic beard was never really fash
ionable in Franco until the time of
Louis XTI and Francis I , whoso war
riors gained a penchant for it during
their Italian campaigns.
American Imltistruil Gnu int.
l"ath" in Cincinnati Enquirer. ]
I reflected upon tho adaptability of
such discoveries as this for the particu
lar civilization and people among whom
they are made. The Americans by
theirery quickness to form corpora
tions sci/.o upon these bounties of nature
and utilize them over enormous areas.
Coal oil in tho hands of an unenter
prising race would still be a mere loqal
curiosity , but with a particular genius
for combinations financial , mechani
cal and commercial the Americans
have made coal oil an article of almost
universal export ; have compelled rail
roads to take it in as a standard matter
of freight and to buil ( | tank-ears , etc.
They havu also devised reservoirs , re
fineries , barrel factories , eto. , to 1-ring
this article within tho reach of the
many millions of the earth , and. finally ,
have laid tho longest line of tu ! > o ever
known on the gloijo to transport this
oil over the 4Ud intervening miles , cross
ing tho mountain ranges and driven
from step to step by stationary engines.
Thus the oil which used to rise as scum
on tho creeks and springs is now a
mighty traveler liowinj ; in its viscid
channels whither man commands it , and
it reaches the sea-board and finds
fleets of vessels all prepared to take it
away.

The littie kingdom of Wales , early
united to her more powerful ncighho'r
of England , has a distinctive badgo
drawn irom the vegetable world. The
origin of the Welsh leek is traced back
to the seventh century. Kt. David's
Day , 6-iO , tho Welsh under Cad waller
were marching against an English
army , and , wishing to adopt badges
which might distinguish them from
their enemies , they availed themselves
of those most easily obtained. Each
man plucked a leek from the field
through which he was passing and stuck
it in his cap.
The Welsh arms were victorious ; tlu
leek was adopted in grateful memory of
the event as the national emblem , ami
was long worn by loyal Welshmen
every anniversary of Ft. David's Day.
[ n Shakespeare's play of "Henry \
that prince claiiui the right by his birth
at Monmouth to wear the leek. It
would appear also that the Welsh con
tingent ot" tho English army had worn
this emblem at the battle of i'oiticr.- .
We redollect that a leek in diamonds oc
cupied a prominent place in a j > iv--ii !
jivcn by the ladies of the principality
of Wales to the princes- Wales o.i tij

One of the greatest drawbacks to

on the life and progress of the country.

But by far the most curious vegetable |
growth here is the awhato. Jt is a {

unfortunate worm by living on its lesh. ! '

without at nil altering its outer form or
