Ix the pending political canvass in
France a large list of lady candidates for
tlie assembly has been announced.
Gentlemen have been appealed to assist
these aspirants to legislative honors , but
so far have not responded with any great
alacrity. They want thewomen of
France to attend to their knitting.
IT is very gratifying to know that
there was not an American born citizen
in the murderous crowd that brained
and burned the helpless Chinese miners
at Rock Springs. A large portion of the
criminals were not citizens at all. It will
be a sad day for this country when the
boys and girls bred on our soil and edu
cated in our free schools show the sav
age instincts and merciless cruelty dis
played by the so-called "white" miners
in Wyoming.
ACCORDING to the latest dispatches
the peace negotiations between England
and Russia , with Afghanistan as the
subject matter , have been successfully
terminated. Russia gets everything she
asked for and Afghanistan gets the sat
isfaction of the boy whose bull failed to
take the premium at the fair. He : ( got
a mighty good drive out of the bull. "
The British government have had no
end of fun out of the negotiations and
Mr. Gladstone's government was inci
dentally overthrown on one ot the side
issues-of the drive. Journal.
CHRISTIAN , King of Denmark , has
set himself up as a despot on a small
scale. His parliament having refused
to vote him the subsidies he asked for ,
he is attempting the role of Charles I
of England , and is keeping up his treas
ury balance by levyin provisional taxes.
There is a good deal of agitation over
his unconstitutional measure , and the
mayors of many towns are resigning
rather than to collect his levies. The
people are getting red hot and the first
thing the Prince of Wales knows he will
find himself with a father-in-law on
hand , who has retired from business for
want of assets. Journal.
THE new board of examiners appoint
ed by Secretary Whitney to overhaul the
Dolphin and report what changes and
improvements are necessary to bring her
up to the standard required by the con
tract and the act of congress providing
for her building have completed their
labors. They report that the sum of
$325 will be all that will have to be
expended for the purpose. Now let the
heathens rage and the Inhabitants of
Kentucky imagine a vain thing. Whit
ney has a black eye and his war on old
John Roach appears in the most con
temptible light. $325 is a vast sum to
make all this expense and row about.
