SINCE Lady Godivarode through Cov-
eutiy no stranger procession has paraded
an English city than that which on Sat
urday inarched from Whitechapel to
Hyde Park. Hysterical women , attired
in black , rode in wagons weeping , ges
ticulating , beating their breasts like fa
natical Mohammedans at the festival of
Hussein. Little children were taken
from the nursery and displayed in snow
white frocks as types of the infants aged
five or six , whom the British aristocracy
was supposed to spend its time in se
ducing. Gong thumping Salvationists ,
notoriety hunting politicians , editors
frenzied with their own wild words , rad
icals and demagogues , all the cheap
jacks of social reform , conducted them
selves like howling dervishes and weight
ed the air with their platitudinous mor
ality. Never , out of an asylum , was
uch mad and mischievous mummery
seen. N. Y. Herald.
THE girl who elopes has been having
a picnic lately. During the past ten
days her good times have been faithful
ly chronicled , and a glance at the re
cord shows her to be just as dashing as
ever. In one place she has been running
away with a man twice her age , in an
other with the husband of another wo
man , and still another with a boy not
yet of age. In addition to this she has
filled in an unoccupied moment by mar-
rj'ing a colored man who seemed to be
white , and in one instance marrying one
who seemed quite black. It has been
a matter of some indifference to her as
to whom she eloped with , only so it hap
pened to be a man.
JYESTEKDAY morning , at the Union
depot , a squad of nine monkeys and a
large dog attracted a great deal of at
tention. Upon inquiry it was learned
that the party owning them was teach
ing them to play base ball , and they had
progressed under his tuition so far as to
be able to play a tolerably fair game.
The dog captains the nine. The whole
thing is not only comical to look at , but
in the imagination calls forth everything
that is ridiculous and funny. They were
en route from Macon to Savannah.

" ? PiEE Chicago &Northwestern is stead-
ilyp'dshing its way westward through
Wyoming. It is headed toward Ogden ,
and if the Burlington does not soon be
gin the work of constructing its line
through this state , the Northwestern will
reach Ogden ahead of it. The Burling
ton , however , needs only to build to
rand Junction , which is much less than
l.he distance which separates the termin
us of the Northwestern from either Og
den or Salt Lake City. Denver Trib

MORE than five hundred thousand
cases of bowel complaint have been cur-
d by Chamberlain's Colic , Cholera and
Diarhcca Remedy. Only think of the
; > ain and suffering it has relieved , the
igony and distress it has prevented ; he
ionics it has made happy ; the lives it
las saved , and you will appreciate the
good work it has done. 25 cent , 50 cent

THE belles of Saratoga have a substi-
; ute for kissing , and it consists in rub-
) ing checks. The maidens ( fair ) meet.
The nasal appendage of one is slid back
about to the ear of the other , and the
onjunctive cheeks held hard together ,
are slowly rubbed against each other un-
, il they part at the corners of the mouth.
This style of osculationt however , is not
cry fashionable with tho masculine por
tion of society.
TTE hear considerable nowadays about
-tenure of office , " but "tenure of life' '
seems to remain as uncertain in the
Lone Star State as of yore. One wild
Texan named Al Lockie alone succeed
ed in eliminating seven citizens , men
and women , from the land of the living.
Monday of last week. Judge Lynch
shortly thereafter sat upon his case ,
without expense to the commonwealth.
A MAX never knows what it is to be
struck with happiness and lightning at
ihe same time until he has had a pretty
* irl as his partner at whist and she has
eaned over the table and with a delic-
ous love light in her eye , whispered loud
enough to be heard all over the room :
"Say , dear Mr. Smith , I havn't got a
single trump ! Do tell me who to play.
Fall Eiver Herald.
THE cattlemen are called the "fenc-
ive partisans. " The proclamation of
the president is a notable instance of
wire pulling on a large scale.
Ovnii ten thousand persons were
drowned in Canton , Ciinaurid ) vicinity ,
' by floods which caused the moat fright
ful devastations.
