DR. JULIDS GEUTH JR. , has been ap
pointed State Veterinarian by Governor

"WAITING , ONLY WAITING , " is the
impatient chirrup of the Democratic ex
pectants , and the despairing wail of the
offensive partisan Republican who ex
pects to go.
LONDON , the great and powerful Sod
om and Gomorrah of the present , is be
ing shaken from centre to circumfer
ence by the disclosures of immorality in
high places by the Pall Mall Gazette.
A PAPER will shortly be issued from
Trenton by A. S. Bosworth , late of the
Culbertson Sun. As A. S. is a Simon-
pure Democrat , it is fair to assume that
the new paper will be bourbon in poli
tics.
THE Harlan County Times by H. 0.
Chapman at Alma is upon our table.
Also , the Kaleidoscope by K. H. Mont
gomery at Cambridge. That Nebraska
pulled through the grasshopper business
all right is encouraging.
"LIBERTY is dead in Utah , " is the
burden of many of our exchangessince
the insult offered to the stars and stripes
on the 4th of July has become general
ly known. About the next thing we will
take pleasure in recording as being dead
in Utah will be a number of Mormons.
TUB London Jewish Chronicle , in an
nouncing the intention of the Queen to
create Sir Nathaniel M. de Rothschild a
peer of the united kingdom , says : Sir
Nathaniel will assume tho title of Lord
Rothschild. His elevation to the house
of lords not only confers personal honor
on the recipient of the Queen's gracious
favor , but also sheds lustre upon the en
tire Jewish community. This creation
of the first Jewish peer to England is
one of the most significant of the acts
of Mr. Gladstone , to whose advocacy in
part it was due that Baron Rothschild ,
Sir Nathaniel's father , was eventually
allowed to sit in the house of commons.
To Mr. Gladstone , it will be remem
bered , is also due the appointment of
Sir George Jessel , first as solicitor gen
eral and subsequently as master of the
rolls. By the parliamentary oath amend
ment bill , which received the royal as
sent on May 1 , 1866 , Lord Rothschild
will be enabled to take his seat among
the peers of England without any dif
ficulty in connection with the oath to
be administered to him.
THE following is a translation of a
dispatch written by Publius Lentulus ,
President in Judea to the Roman Sen
ate , concerning the Redeemer , the orig
inal of which is preserved in the Vati-
cian at Rome.
"There hath appeared in these our
days , and is at present living among us ,
in Judea , a man of singular virtue ,
whom they call Jesus Christ. Of the
Jews he is accepted aud believed to be a
great prophet of the truth ; but his own
disciples adore him as being descended
from the immortal God. He raiseth
the dead to life , and cureth all manner
of human maladies and diseases by the
word or touch.
"In stature he is tall and of perfect
form ; his countenance and air sweet and
reverent , such as the beholders may both
love and fear ; his hair is of a color that
would be difficult to describe some
thing resembling the color of a ripe
chestnut from the crown of his head
to his ears , whence downward it is of
tint or golden hue , and falls waving and
curling into ringlets , and spreads itself
into graceful profusion on his shoulders.
In the centre , his hair is parted by a
seam or a partition , and falls over each
ear after the manner of the Nazcrines.
His forehead is lofty and pale , and his
face without a spot or wrinkle , beauti
ful , with a slight tinge of comely com
plexion. His nose and mouth nre for
ed with the most admirable symmetry.
His beard is thick and of the color of
his hair ; not of any great length , and
divided in the centre of his chin , taking
nearly the form of a fork. His look in
nocent and mature. His eyes blue , bril.
liant and serenely beautiful. In reprov
ing he is awful and majestic ; in admon
ishing courteous , sweet , and friendly ,
and speaking or acting he is grave , tem
perate , modest and wise. It cannot be
remembered that any have erer seen
him laugh , but many have seen him
weep. In a word , he is a man , who ,
by his exceeding great beauty and di
vine perfections , surpasseth the child
ren of men. " Goodson Gazette. '
V
THINGS look a little more warlike in
that portion of Asia now interesting as
the theatre of intrigue between England
and Russia. The picture of the ameer
of Afghanistan is a delightful oriental
one that describes him as coolly pocket
ing the subsidies or bribes offered him
by each power , making the most liberal
promises to both and intending to keep
his engagements with neither. It is
seldom that so thorough an example of
eastern guile and western ingenuousness
is offered to the gaze of a gibing world.
The ameer is a con. con. man of mag
nificent proportions , and the possessor
of a gall unsurpassed in size and qual
ity. Journal.
An eastern daily promulgates the as
tonishing , we might say , heart-rending
information , that bangs will no longer
be fashionable ; that the hair will now
be more in a "bob" on the top of the
head. It would seem that nature orig
inally intended the hair to be worn on
the head at any rate , and this is evi
dently a return to "first principles. "
The oracle further decrees , however ,
that time be given those wearing "fore-
tops" to have the same grow long
enough to conform with the new order
of things , before they can be classed
with the unfashionable those outofthe
world. So there is some hope beyond.
THE Arabians have a funeral custom
of placing ten cents in the mouth of a
corpse , to pay its passage over the river
of death. If that is the price of fer
riage it is an outrage , for a schooner
can be purchased with half the amount.
Culbertson Sun : Divorce proceedings
have been instituted by Mrs. Louisa C.
Williams against "Dr. " S. D. Williams ,
late of Trenton. The "doctor , " we un
derstand , has hung out his shingle in
McCook , and we look for an increase in
the mortality rate of that town.

CORRESPONDENCE.
VAILTON NOTES.
As this section is truly the garden spot of
Great "West , and is generally known through
out the state , we will not try to weave in ad
vertising material , but will'simply notice such
items as may be of interest to those having the
general welfare of the community at heart.
Wo understand that Vailton school closed on
the 10th.
John Hilton of Illinois is domiciled with his
brother for a season.
We also note the late arrival of Mr. Bopen-
mirc , brother-in-law of Squire Hoyt.
Mr. Speer of Saline county.can now be count
ed as one of the substantial citizens of Vailton.
Mr. Gambill has bored a number of wells
here lately. John will find the"Invisiblo Platte"
if anyone can.
Mr. Canfleld and wife of Harvard have been
visiting friends of "Auld Lang Syne" the
guests of J. F. Megrue.
There are some pretty large tracts of prairie
opened up preparatory to extensive farming
next season. Present crops look well.
We could note a score of substantial settlers
within a radius of a few miles of Vailton , but
will not presume on your space now.
Mr. Sprague , formerly of Guide Rock , this
state , has located just south. His boy has been
quite unwell the past month , but not serious
as yet.
We observe that the corn has nearly recov
ered from the set-back it received from the
hail visitation , this being partly in the hail-
swept section.
Miss Parks is spending the summer with her
sister , Mrs. Williams , and has built a residence
at the base of the rocky "El Capitan" over
looking the majestic Driftwood.
J. F. Megrue has lost three yearlings for
some reason not well known , possibly black
leg. Herd appears to be doing finely now , as
do all the cattle in this section.
Quite a large numberof promincntministers
from abroad were present at the Council helc
at Vailton on the 25th ult. Among them were
Revs. Dungan , Dean , Mann , Hall , Buck and
quite an ingathering generally. The founda
tion of the Congregational church was then
completed. Rev. Hall has been preaching reg
ularly of late at the school house , and having
met with quite a degree of encouragement ,
will probably continue. Ho is a faithful work
er in the vineyard and is well recommended
by the Council.
