THE medical profession is well rep resented in McCooJi'.s candidates for -office this fall. Drs. Johnson . and Green , Gqroner and CommifiBioner , competent and carefuL THK re-nomination of C. L. Nettle- 11 , ton'lor Superintendent of Public In struction and Page T. Francis for Stir- veyor was evidence that the people be- Hcved in their merits , aud xlecmcd them worty of their confidence. THE appearance of cholera in this .country next year is predicted by emi nent physicians. The best way to avert such -a calamity is for the author ities of all our .towns and cities to act * .as if the } * were quite sure it was coming. TALMAOE intimates thai ' -'the .coming sermon' ' will be between seven and eighteen minutes in length. Then it-will be neatly printed and carefully read at home. , Ifc is not the great length of sermons that causes empty pews , for there are few preachers , in lhee days , who offend by prolixity. OUR American money kings are mere pigmies compared with the money kings of the Chinese empire. Editor Wing Chin Fee tells of his countrymen who is worth $300,000,000 and of another whose fortune is but a little less. In case of war with France or any other power the emperor could readily fill his military chest. Tns Republican State Convention which met at Lincoln , last Wednesday , nominated lion. ? ! . B. Reese -of Saun ters county , for supreme judge ; M. J. Hull of Clay , J. M. lliatt of Harlan , E. P. Holmes of Pierce , J.T. i.Iallalieu of BijffilOj for regents of the univer sity. George W. E. Dorsey of Dodge county was re-elected chairman of the 5tite central committee. 'TriE theory that Nebraska is not a ) fruit-growing state was exploded at the ) -Inter-Ocean office yesterday upon the : -arrival of a bos containing some of the finest specimens or fall and winter ap ples that were ever seen. They came from the Nebraska state fairwhere they u 'had been on exhibition , and were sent I o b\- the thoughtful J.E. Allan , secretary of the Nebraska State Horieultuial so ciety. Chicago Inter Ocean. THE Chinese are not the soldiers that the French are , " says Mr. Bookwaltcr , of Ohio who has just been round the world , * * but the } * have a clear policy. They are the best diplomatists in the world. The Chinese State office is re garded as the keenest on the globe. The influence of the Chinese among all those Eastern ' - - people is'subtle-and-per fect. Fancy tlu > . accurancy and skill of .1 government which under one system , can control four hundred and thirty millions of people. We are beginning to tremble that we control'fifty millions With liberty. " Red Willow. Corrcepondonco to Lincoln Journal. Our county fair is booked to coma off October 3 , 4 and 5 , and die indications are that there will be a good -display. The grounds arc being prepared for Ihe accommodation -exhibitors , and no pains will be spared to make it a success. OUR-CROPS throughout the county are quite satis factory. Owing to an extremely > dry fall and -winter , fall grain was mostly a failure , but the spring sowing of small grain has done betterand , though little has ycfc been thrashed , ihc average yield will doubtless compare favorably with other portiouo of the state. The notato crop is very good -and so is the average com crop.Even upland fanning lias been -a success this yeai- For two or ihree years past some of the farmers along the Hod Willow creek .have made quite a success of planting on the low bottoms , and iti the fall have been able to laugh and jeer at the upland -tanners. Last spring bottom farming was a boom and large lields weve cleared of willows and timber , broken up and planted ; then came the floods. The heavy rains sent the creek booming , and then that class of farming didn't boom so much. Since that the creek has boomed out of its banks iive or sjx times remaining so sometimes for a week or more. The result is , low ground farming is largely a failure this year. Our rainfall since April is as follows : April r 1.75 inches May 2.8. ! : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : : t August -3-S " Total 1"'S2 September , so far 8-1 ( The hay ciop is nearly all secured , and is the best ever known. Grass on the.prairie was never better. In looking over the country I find this to be true : All our energetic , business farmers are making a fail- progress towards wealth. The pro gress may be slow , but it is sure and apparent. One good evidence of this fact is the ste.idy growing of the towns and the starting up of men in business. Peoplf ; wear better clothes , build better houses and barns , and the ranks of the grumblers arc thinner. Land is rising in value , and more men of wealth arc P coming to buy. Our farmers arc turn ing their attention to raising of stock , not on the range method , but stock : fanning , stock in the hands of the land owners. and it lias been demon strated that it pays even to borrow money at 10 per cent , to invest in this business. The farmer with a half section - , tion of land can carry at least fifty head of cattle , and i'rom six to ten head of horsesand when he can turn olt a dozen b or more head of fat steers every year , and a pair of horses , he ecu live com paratively easy , even though he raises , ' ' but little grain. . OUR TOWXS is previously stated are growing. In- lianola is making a very solid growth , llayden & McCartney are putting up a m large brick store , also Mr. C. S. Quick. Mr. McCartney is also putting up one ; f the most artistic brick residences west f Hastings. Several other " very neat esidenccs have been added to the town luring the past summer , and the gcncr- a il busines of the town is brisk. McCook is also pushing ahead with n nnch energy. Quite a large number sc f new residences have been erected ami ire under way. Among them is that if Mr. George llocknell which is prob ably the most expensive residence in own. Mr. G. L. Laws of the land iffice , is also adding a very neat reii- ience to aristocratic ' -Mount Zion. " In visiting the town as I do frequent- y , I iind the general business of the ilace is rapidly increasing and the mor dants are carrying much larger stocks goods than one year ago. ROYAL BUCK. September 25 , 1883. A CONFERENCE of free traders was icld at St. Louis , yesterday. , at which he organization of a free trade league or the southwst was discussed. , The Republican Valley. Omaha Dec. The wonderful growth and prosperity of the Republican Valley in past years is supplemented , the present year , with a harvest of grainvegetables and stock that puts all previous records in tthe shade. Fourteen years ago it was thought by many .that the region watered by the Republican , now comprising eight of the southern tier of counties in Neb raska , was a wild waste , and that it could not be used for any other than grazing purposes. The men who settled in that region then and successfully braved thu privations of pioneering , can now look upon that same region dotted with thriving villageSjSubstantial homes , stacks of grain and waving fields of corn. The excellence of this valley for stock-raising has long been known and sought after. The great herds of buf falo found by the early settlers left no doubt about the grass and water. Buf falo grass still grows awl cattle fattei nicely .upon it , and if the snow fall i ; not too great , thrive all winter with no other food. I3ui the cosr-boys and cat tle ranhccs have given place to the agricultural settlers. If any one doubting ihc fertility of this region would now journey through Webster , Franklin , Harlan and Ftirnas counties , and count the stacks of oats , wheat , burley and rye , and measure the stalks of ripening corn , lie would soon be convinced of .his error. From all points comes th-s report of .handsome yields fora distance of many miles ou cither side of the stream bed. Ln 1880 the B. & M. company ex tended their line more than a hundred miles into the Republican Valley. This is now the popular Burlington route to Denver. The company were the owners ot many acres of rich soil , aiul were de sirous of having permanent settlements along their line. Acco ding , their cir culars were sent through thu land an nouncing cheap homes in the West. Nothing so encourages the settlement so a new country as cheap lands. Thou sands of acres , now worth ten or twelve dollars , were sold fur three or four del lars. Such prices enabled farmers who had rented farms valued at forty to sixty dollars per acre in eastern states to purchase farms of their own. There were also thousands of acres subject to homestead and timber claim. The titles to these timber claims have just been completed and there arc now not a few homes under cultivation with nice groves of timber on them. Cotton wood is still a favorite because it grows so rapidly , and. makes shade and wind break in a' few years. Ash and box- elder grow naturally and with little'care. An old settler and cattle-raiser said the black walnut grows rapidly ami seems native to the climate. The increased Cultivation and planting of trees has produced the anticipated effect upon the rain fall which has increased year by year , until i ow , when it is abundant , he Republican flows full to the brim.
