Grain List Given Support and High Prices Returned ^ heat Nervous Much of Ses sion but Averages Higher and Finishes Near Top; ■" Confidence Revived. By CHARLES J. LEYDEN. I'nlferMl Service Staff ( urrespoiiilent. Chicago. April 6. - Giving the appear ance of having flna 113' righted Itself, the grain list today was afforded appreciable hupport and higher prices was the result. Wheat was nervous much of the session, but averaged higher throughout and finished near the top. Statements by leading men In the trade that the awing* down the last two months had gone too far and that a brisk upward reaeion was overdue tended to revive confidence. "Wheat closed 2c to 3 Vic higher, corn was 4 Vic to 4>4c higher, oats were 114c to 1H« higher and rye ruled 2ftc to 8^c up. AH grains acted ss if th#y were in a sold out condition. Covering by shorts In wheat and corn during the last few mln utftn of trade uncovered an almost lack of selling orders. In wheat the stabiliz ing Influences were the strength at Liverpool and the reduction of 2,573.000 bushels la the United States \ Isible sup ply. The seaboard confirmed but 2no,nnn bushels of wheat sold for export, 100.000 to 200.000 bushels of Canadian oats and seme barley. About 00.000 bushels of hard wheat sold at 3c over the .May. c. 1. f. Huffalo. Liverpool closed 4'«d to 6d higher. Corn was strong all day and registered Ita top levels nt the finish. Commission houses generally were good buyers of this grain, which Indicated that th» out side interest was better. Locals who had sold the market on -the bulges had diffi culty. In covering near the close. The demand for cash corn was mote active and large shipping aales were effected. Commission houses had buying orders in oats much of the session. Northwest interests were the best sellers. Eye was HftM with other grains. The volume of trade was not large. Export tnterest in thiq grain has been spasmodic of late. Provisions were off in s slow' trade. Lard closed 2Uc to 7*4o lower and ribs were 1-V4fc to 15c lower. I*lt Notes. .Speculative trade in wheat and other graips was broader than for some time. Resting orders to buy on the dips hovered in the pit all day, and the flurries from every-dip were rapid. The relative weak ness that persisted in Winnipeg generated a bearish feeling among the local element at tipies. but shorts were stampeded at the flnitm. The backward tendency of the Canadian market was really what made the wheat market so choppy. The story is that there is considerable low grade Canadian grain pressing for sale and at. cheaper levels than domestic. It Js painted out that Winnipeg should sell at a sharp premiuln over Chicago be fore the buying side locally can be re garded as a safe Investment. The f"r eigk? demand for wheat today gave no signs of improving, but report* have it that if our price* hold steady for a few 3avs foreign*™ will re-enter the market. The changes of wheat and flour on ocean passage for the week in View <,f the reduced world shipment* were not such as ,to hazard the belief that consumption xbrpad ha* been facilitated by the recent drastic break in prices. Most reports have It that supplies on the other side are moderate. It look* as though for eigners are still to be convinced that grain prices have settled down. From various sources the milling de mand for wheat Is reported as fair to ■ good. Minneapolis today for the first time noted a healthier eastern mill de mand for wheat. Stocks <*f wheat in the two northwest market* of Minneapolis and T»uluth are fairly large, and stocks are decreasing but moderately. It is not im probable. however, but that the failure of spring wheat stocks to decrease more rapidly might be offset by the strength developing In the winter wheat terminals. May wheat In Kansas City the last two days has narrowed up nearly *c an com pared with Chicago. CHICAGO PRICES. By Updike Grain Co., Atlantic 511? Art. I Open. I Hlglt. I Low, I Close. I Sat. Wht.
