l Omaha Bee Sports' ■ ■ -. ** — ■■ ■ ■ — I Dempsey Thinks Unknown Fighter Will Defeat Him Doesn’t Believe Present-Day Challengers Can Lift Heavyweight Title. 09 ANOKL.ES, March 3.—.Tack Dempsey believes a fighter row unknown wilt beat him for the title. "Some bolxer no one ever heard of today la probably going through the hard day* of prelimi nary fighting now that will end by knocking me over," d e c la r ed the champion. "I don't think Tommy Gibbons, Jack Renault, ._„ Firpo, George Godfrey, Harry Will* or any of the contenders today will ever wear the heavyweight crown. "My reason for saying this Is that T certainly will he champion for n while yet and all of the present crop me getting along In age; they can not be their best in a short time. VOl'NG FIGHTER. "The man who wins the title will be n young fighter, probably not yet In his prime, just as I was when I L*y\t Willard." While a great many typewriters have worked overtime recently tell ing the world that Dempsey plans to retire, or does not figure on re tiring, it’s no secret that the cham pion lias tired of the ring and would like to hang up Ills gloves. “I surely will not be an active fighter in 1926 if I do not fight this year." said Dempsey. "I could hardly he in much shape without fighting in 1924 and 1925. W ANTS TO OlIT. "It would not be a very pleasant filing to drop out without defending my crown, hut there would be noth ing else to do If no promoters were able to get me into the ring before the spring or summer of 1926, let us say. “Of course, I feel I will get one or two chances to fight this sum mer, and that means I will prob ably fight again in 1926. “I do not fear any bouts that may be arranged for this year and figure I will retain by belt.” The heavyweight champion has started training at his new gymnas ium and Is working out there four or five times a week. He is probably 20 to 25 pounds overweight. Jimmy Manll won on tecbnlCHl knock out over •'Young" Ilrilno in third round of four-round bout. Jack Higgins won on technical knock out over Roy Hceckcr In third round of four-round bout. George Hnrns banded referee s decision ovee Frank l’etli In all-round bout. Mike Dale knocked out Royal ( nffman In sixth round of right-round bout. "Battling" Stniyer handed referee's de rision over “Rusty" Evans in 10-round bout. IKE" DA I-E of Grand Island up set the dope and 1 loyal Coffman of Council Bluffs Monday night in the semiwindup of the Kilts’ fight program when he knocked the Iowan nut In the sixth round of a sched uled eight-round bout with a short light to the jaw followed by a left to the pit of the stomach. Coffman didn’t seem to he fighting up to Ills form. His punches seemed to lack the punch which stamped him as one of the most promising fighters discovered in this neck of the woods for some time. Royal made a name for him self as a fighter when lie won his way to France as a member of tlie Olympic boxing team. Dale took considerable edge off Coffman's rep utation last night. This Dale person is a combina tion fighter anti boxer. He dis played good footwork and a good punch in either mitt. lie is de serving of more fights in Omaha. After the first round, which Hale won easily, Coffman came back in the second and evened the score, giv ing Dale a good beating about the was even, with both fighters slugging away for dear life. Coffman bobbed Dale's head back and forth with a right to the jaw several times, hut the out-stater evened the score by slamming Royal about the face and stomach. The fourth was a repeti tion of the third, with little to choose between the fighters. It was a give and take, slam, hang and duck affair that had the crowd yelling from start to finish. Dale started boxing with Coffman in tlie fiftli and gave the former Olympic boxer plenty or punishment. Royal fought' bark the best he could, but it was evident in this round that the Iowan was tiring. In tlie sixth and last round Coff man started out good, lie hit Dale on the Jaw ami turned I lie Islander completely around. Royal followed up with a right to tlie stomach that made Mike seek cover. It was when the two rame out of rinse quarti-rs that Dale uncorked his short right jab that landed on Coffman's jaw. The right to tlie jaw no sooner landed than Dale let fly his left to the stem ach. The Iowan crumpled up on the canvas. As Referee Paul Leidy tolled off tlie seconds. Coffman tried to get up at tlie rount of nine but his efforts were in vain. The main event between "Rusty” Evans, York, and "Battling" Straver. Grand Island, was one of those fights between a clever boxer and n wailop abaorhing battler of the battle-scarred variety. The referee handed the de cision to Evans at the end of the 10 rounds, why. no one seemed to know. The York fighter easily out boxed Straver and the latter didn't put tip any sort of a fight until the last two rounds. Referee t.eldv got ofr on the wrong foot during the ihird preliminary when he v.oe George Rarnes a de ..... — ■ "—-l cislon over Frank Petlz of Bassett. Xeb., at the end of six rounds. The crowd hooted the decision for several minutes. Barnes and Petiz are mid dleweight*. The latter, in the writ er's opinion, deserved a draw, If not the decision. Neither fighter did much damage, but what little damage was done during the bout came from the out stater. “Young" Bruno lost on a technical knockout to Jimmy Mardl In the third round of a scheduled four round bout. .Murdi slipped to the floor in the third round and Kruno accidentally hit his opponent while the latter was on one knee. Jack Higgins of Omaha won on n technical knockout over Roy Beech er of IJnroln. The bout was sched uled for four rounds. Everett and Ernest Rlghtmlre of Omaha boxed a four-round exhibi tion that raused considerable enter tainment for the, fans. Everett is 8 years old and his brother, Ernest, one year older. Gartin OfATFit.T.n. Ida , March Teddy Gartin of Denver. Rocky mountain states welterweight champion, made short work of Vir gil sparks of Pocatello, knocking him out In the first round of their sched uled 12 round main event here last night. The bout had gone but a minute and a half when Gartin dipped Sparks on the chin and the Pocatello lad went to the ranvns for a count of .nine. A few seconds later Gartin sent oxer a terrific left to the head and Sparks went out. Kid Murray of Omaha* and Jimmy Roagen of Portland. Ore., fought four fast rounds to a drnw In the semi windup event. Janda Nine to Banquet. Chicago, March 3.—Kdouard Hore mans, Belgian cue artist, made sure of at least second place In the Interna tional 18.2 balkline billiard champion ship tournament here today by defeat ing Krich Hagenlacher, German champion, 400 to 254. in eight innings. If young .Jake Schaefer loses in to night's match with Willie Hoppe, re tiring champion. S haefer and Hore mans will tie for the title. If Hoppe wins from S» haefer, the latter will play Horemans for the title in a play-off match. Tf Srhaefei wins tonight's contest he wiil annex the crown. Critics asserted that the high runs made at the beginning of the match by both players were al most as remarkable as the feat, of Schaefer a few days ago in running out from spot in 400 points. Horemans appeared supremely con fident and did not seem at all wor ried by the high runs with which Hagenlacher started. Winning the bank, Hagenlacher ran 123 from spot starting his run at the head rail and staving there until he had passed 80. Then he got going at the foot rail. The German left the ivories well gathered and Horemans started a ses sion of close nursing and did not stop until he reached 144. During one period he clicked off 100 billiards with out making a table-length shot and finally missed a three-cushion shot. Hagenlacher made three runs of 4') nr better in four times to the table, but Horemans came back with 122 for his session run and with 2.5 in his A TI \ II AN '• Rlr,t rare: 4 h, furlong* pur«* 9700. 2-| * a Neuahank . 1 "7 »Wh. l. THE Omaha Elks staged their first fight program In their new cluti house Monday night and the show went over mighty big. .Match maker Dick flrotte of the Fllks tsj to be congratulated on the show. The j ' Brother Bills-' who attended, and j there were hundreds of them, got a j big kick out of the bouts. The bout between Coffman and Mike Dale, the latter of Grand Island, was a thriller from start to finish. Hale lacked tiie ol' kayoe sign on Royal In the sixth round of their scheduled eight-round bout, liirt before he accomplished the trick the fans were treated to a slam-bang, give-and-take bout.
