Warrant Not Yet Issued for Wood, Police Declare (Young American Believed to Be in Spain; Friends Say $40,000 Would Square His Accounts. Rlarritx, France, Feb. 15.—No war rant baa yet been Issued for the ar rest of Osborne C. Wood, former Ahierlcan army lieutenant and son of Governor General Wood of the Philippine Islands, following a com plaint filed by the director of the Biarritz casino that Wood had cash ed an alleged worthless check for 35, 1)00 franc*. The police sey they do not know Wood's exact whereabouts, but they mderattnd he Is in San Sebastian, Spain. It ia atated the Bayonne magis trate, to whom the complaint was transmitted, decided to wait to give ‘he young American a final oppor tunity to make good. The director Is not inclined to press his charge providing he recovers his alleged loss, lie said Wood had enjoyed a large credit with him and had cashed checks st. -various times for more than 200,000 francs and that these checks had all been good. Pails, Feb. 25.—Friends of Osborne G. Wood, asserted today that $40,000 would be sufficient to wipe out his alleged Indebtedness. They added that amounts claimed by Iwo exclu clubs In Pal is' a* being due them ^ by Wood had been settled. The French "surete generale"—a polietf organization covering all of France—announced this evening that It had received no advices that a war rant against Wood had been issued at Bayonne or of any new charges agsinst him. It was added that the surete generale would not intervene In the caae In any way unless the Bayonne magistrates issued a war rant, after which it would be com pelled to notify its agents in all the casinos In France that Wood should not lie permitted in the future to' participate In their activities. It whs asserted here today that ■\V*ood, shortly before his departure from Paris, offered a check for \ 175.000 francs as an option for secur ing the proprietorship of a well 1;nown Mont Martre dancing resort but that the ch»ck was refused be cause another bidder had ■ a prior claim. CONFIRMATION OF WARREN PRESSED Washington, Feb. 15 —Admlniatra tion leaders, after a conference today with Senator Robinson, Arkansas, the democratic leader, decided to call up the nomination of Charles B Warren of Michigan to be attorney general at this session of the senate, and to press for confirmation unless It develops discxiaslon will he of such duration as to interfere seriously with the legislative program. If Senators Reed, Missouri, Walsh, Montana, democrats, and- others in opposition insist on extended debate, the republican leaders said the nomin ation would be laid aside and Presi dent Coolldge would resubmit to the special session of the senate called for noon, March 4. Osborne Prison Theories Probed Record *of Noted Official Is Searched in Trial of Color ado Warder! Wednesday. fly Associated Treat. Colorado Springs, Colo., Feb. 25.— General prison conditions and the name of Thomas Mott Osborne held the attention of courtroom spectators today at the trial of Thomas J. Ty nan. Colorado penitentiary warden, before the state civil service commis sion on charges ot prison mismanage ment brought by former Governor Sweet. The cross examination of expert testimony offered by Professor Austin H. MacCormlck of Bowdoin college, Brunswick, Me., and the di rect and crosa-questlonlng of Pnul W. Garrett, executive secretary of the National Society for Penal Informa tion, occupied the day's session. Garrett's testimony was largely corroborative of that offered yester day by MacCormlck who aided him In compiling the report on state penal institutions W'hich formed a basis for the former executive’s charges of in efficiency, Incompetency and permit ting brutality to prisoners. Garrett, too, charged Tynan with making false and misleading state ments to them during the prison survey In February, 1924. Garrett said that in 11 specific Instances the warden mode "false, contradictory or misleading'1 statements to them. Once the questioning readied the point where a copy of an indictment preferred against Osborne while he was warden of Sing Sing prison was produced. President Roberts of the commission. Abbv Rockefeller, Devotee of Speed, Will Be Married l’ngagement to Young Lawyer Announced, by Parents of Girl Twice Arrested on Traffic Charges. New 3[ork, Feb. 25.—Mr. and Mrs. John D. Rockefeller, jr.. tonight an nounced the engagement of their only daughter, Abby, to David Merri ivether Milton, Jr., a young New York attorney who has known Miss Rocke feller since .childhood. The wedding, it was said, will take place In May, although the date has not yet been set. The couple plans to take a small apnrtment in keeping with Milten's salary. The Milton fifmily have been neigh bors of the Rockefellers at Rocantieo Hills foi1 years and they have also occupied adjacent summer homes at Seal Harbor on the Maine coast. _ Milton. 25, is a graduate of Wil liams college and of the Columbia university law school. In the world wsr he served In the naval reserve unit at Yale. He was admitted to the bar a few months ago and now is as sociated with the Newf York law firm of Sattei lee & Canfield. Miss Rockefeller is 21. She was born In New York clt.v and was edu cated at a private school here. Her name was prominent in the news papers last summer after she had received a suspended sentence In traf fic court on a charge of speeding. An Investigation ordered by Mayor Hylan disclosed that It was her sec ond offense, but that the record had been changed so as to list her as a first offender. The police officers adjudged responsible for suspending the second sentence were disciplined. Milton, friends said tonight, was with Miss Rockefeller when she was arrested and represented har In court. The car she was driving was his. Ford Establishes New Assembling Plant in Japan Detroit, Ket>. 25.—Establishment of the Ford Motor company of Japan. I,td., was announced here today by Edsel B. Ford, who accompanied the announcement with the information that an aseembly plant would be established In Yokohama, the first to be established in the Orient. Details for the new plant have been virtually completed. Ford an nounced, saying that it was expected it would begin functioning about April 1.
