Wheat Advance Checked; Sharp Reaction Next Free Seljing by Longs Offsets Supporting Orders; Com Lower; Oats Down; Rye Rules Off. Hr CHARLES .1. LEYDEN, I nivers*| Mervlr* .stuff Correspondent. Fhimigo, Feb. 16.—A surprising Increase in the Fnited States visible supply for thp "oek. combined with unresponsive Liver pool cables, rhecked the early advance in "beat today and led to a sharp reaction and lower close. Free selling bv longs, largely in the way of prof it-t a k in g. off set the supporting orders that were ever present on the dips. Wheat closed 1 %c to 3%e lower, corn " ■- %C to %r lower. OgtS were %r to %'■ down and rye ruled 1 %e lo 2c off. \- the high point wheat showed a re cover y of 1 ftc from the recent low. and pit observers regarded ihe setback as due. Volume of trade In the wheat pit was moderate compared with the acltvity wit ncased last week. < »n the bulges there was no little hesitancy on the part of speculator# to follow the market, and Indications were that bulls are Inclined to give wheat good support on the breaks only. Wheat sales for export In all positions were placed at 600.000 to 600.000 bushels, mostly gulf, hut including some durum s and 50.000 lmshels of Duluth springs sold to Canadian millers. Liverpool closed %d off to LI higher. Considering the weakness in Wheat, corn gave a good account of Itself. Ac tive local operators were credited with buying corn on the dips. Commission h*.use liquidation >was apparent on the early bulge. The movement of corn from the country has been falling off ma terially. Oats eased with other grains. Commis sion house trade was mixed, with fairly good buying orders seen on the dips. Rye was up and down with wheat, get ting good support on the dips, and run ning into free selling on the bulges. , Provisions averaged higher early, but broke with grains finally. Lard was 20c to 27Vic lower and r|b§ were unchanged. Fit Notes. Chicago. Feb. 16—Th" increase of 69. bushels In the visible supply cam® i in for much comment. Many in the trade were inclin®d to believe that the storks of wheat afloat at Buffalo were errnn eotislv sent in that th°\ showed a gain. Buffalo authorities failed to make any correction. The movement of wheat to markets In this countiy is moderating, and grad ually this will necessarily show up in thp visible figures. As evidence of the extensive marketing of wheat so far this season the figures show that primary re oejpts for seven and one-half months on this crop year have been larger than for any consecutive 12 months during the last five years. Liverpool manifested a weak undertone despite the show of strength in North American markets Saturday. Heavy world shipments and n sizable Increase of stocks on ocean supply presumably de pressed the Fnited Kingdom market. Weakness in the French money situation may also have had something to do with it. Foreign news generally, however, con tinued in favor of the believers of higher prices. TJier® has been considerable spreading of wheat here and between Chicago and outside markets. Felling of wheat in Chicago against purchases at Minneapolis. Kansas City and Winnipeg has been a feature Also there has been buying «>f Kfav wheat against sales of the July The futlnnk for the growing winter wheat £Top is favorable, and those who regard Bio now crop month relatively too high Save been pressing it or the bulges. It *s not unlikely but that there is consld ♦ cable July wheat sold so far In the form ®f a hedge against the new’ crop Min neapolis wheat show’ed relative strength compared with Chicago early, but weak ened finally.
