Prices of Wheat Slips Down After j Early Strength M«\ Wheat Tumbles Nearly IU ( ruts Before Cradi Is \rrested; Close Not Far From Bottom. )!> < II'\K1,K* J. 1.KVDEN. I uiv*r-;i| Service Stuff 4 orre*»pomlent. Chi# ugo. I •!.— Tmnendouh Belling of '•’heat, much of which was forced via i he • virin-loBE-’ order, broke price* badly alto;- ii\' early show of strength today. May who.it in tho lend tumbled 9$*c from M 91'; to $1.85 before the crash was ar rested. The close was not far from the bottom. Winnipeg closed 9<ffil0p lower. Locally wheat closed 3#6c off. corn was Tfe^lVtic lower, oats were ViCT1 %u down and rye ruled 6% ft? 7c off. T ho extreme break today, according to icjorts In the trade, was largely due "to the closing out of a big line of long wheat for tho account of Julius Flescnmann. who died Thursday. ‘While these reports received little eredence, the best explana tion r*f-the enormous liquidation In wheat the last few days is the public's shat ter# tl confidence in tho present market. export sales were estimated ns high as LOQO.OQU bushel* In some quarters at the st uboArd, with last reports placing the business around 700,000 bushels wheat for the day. Liverpool closed HtyTid higher. Liquidation in corn, attracted almost completely by the weakness In wheat, forced this grain down sharply, but In the last hour native buying was uncovered and prices made a good recovery, with Urn close moderately lower. The demand uir cash corn wan morn active, while of ferings from the country were light. Oat* held well considering the break in other grains. There wan a mixed trade on through emu mission houses, with -t h e dips encountering fairly good support. Coverihg by shorts was In evidence late. Liquidation broke rye sharply. On the drop busing by export end cash Interests affected a it appreciable recovery front toot t• ni levels. Provisions eased with grains. Lard was 7 >4 'n l$c lower and riba were 2b @ 30c lower. Pit Notes. Liquidation In wheat today was fairly general and at. the close of the day the majority in the trade were inclined to believe It was about complete. May wheat tl the low point showed a loss of 20 ■«u from the high made recently. The break wiped out much of the hold ing* credited io .the public. News re garding tho fundamental situation in wheat was little changed. Tho tenor of foreign new* was en cou ragtag, but little attention was paid. Liverpool displayed a remarkably strong undertone by closing higher in face of the drastic break in North American markets on Thursday. Cibles from there said offerings of new crop southern hemisphere wheat were email, and that drouth reports from the continent at tracted fresh, buying, cash and specula tive. The entry of politics into the present wheat market, with urging* ou the part of some legislators for wheat Investign# tions. together with efforts for farm re lief. hat gone fur in leading to the de moralization or the bulla. However, there v.ns an excellent class of buying under $1.88 for the May wheat, down to SI.83 late in the day. The demand for cash wheat In most markets of this country has been in clined to hesitate the last few days, and as a result premiums have dropped. Premiums for the lower grades of wheat were as much as 3e lower today. South west points *tohl of a slow demand. It seems odd. however, that with the de mand for wheat In different parts of the country supposedly light, especially !u 1 he southwest, that stock* should keep decreasing so rapidly. For four day* Kansas City stock* of wheat decreased over &no.'M s. Stocks at various port* also are decreasing. CHICAGO PRICES. r.y Updike Grain company. Atlantic 631?. Art. l Open. | High.
