Today Antitoxin and <i Rib. 77m Dollar Annies. A Million Link. m hot the i aliph Said. By ARTHUR BRISBANE. V---' Three hurrfied thousand units of diphtheria antitoxin carried into Noma ring sled arrived frozen solid. Horror* hope the antitoxin Will retain in# power to fight the diphtheria plague in spite of the freezing. Heat would destroy it, as it de stroys !!?#', if sufficiently intense. Rut the a mpler germs of life, good and had. survive intense cold. That is why a child skating in winter, nibbling a piece of ice from a stagnant pond, may get typhoid from the ice. And that is why, when this earth hail cooled off sufficiently to make life possible, germs of life from some ohler planet could come traveling through the ether at a temperature «.>f absolute zero and start life nr. this planet, to travel up through the millions of years of evolution. Your real original ancestor, ac cording to scienc -, was not a mon key, a lemur of 'he five-toed sala mander of the c»r' dniferous era, from which we are -upposed to get the five fingers on each hand. That real anres'or was a meteor ite. flung off from another planet, carrying the germs of life locked up inside of it, traveling endless miles through the ether, striking this earth's atmosphere, becoming intensely hot hy atmospheric fric tion, plunging into the ocean’s water, and exploding there, releas ing germs of lit* to jtart, as all life on earth did, in the salt water. That’s the scientific story, but it will never replace in the hearts and minds of a majority of those living the more romantic story of the lonely Adam, created out of dust, and beautiful Eve, made of a rib taken from Adam, while he slept, and the wicked snake, walking along on the tip of his tail, until for his sins he was condemned to travel flat on the ground. See Genesis for all details. The religious man says to the scientist: “Your explanation of life on this earth is worse than foolish, it's sin ful.” The scientist replies: “How do you account for the fact that every man has the same number of ribs on both sides of his body? If one rib was taken out to make Eve, there should be one rib missing on one side.” A scientist did say that to a dis tinguished American clergyman once, and invited the clergyman to go to a museum and count the ribs >n many skeletons. The clergyman replied: "I should consider it hlasphem nus to do so. I know without look ing that every man has one rib less on one side than on the other." John D. Rockefeller and George F. Bayer, who is either the second or third richest man in the world, played golf, each finishing nine holes with a score of 54. It is said to have been a perfectly peaceful sight. It reminded you of Jengis Khan, the powerful, calmly playing chess with hi* crippled son, while hi* armies were fighting and win ning all over the east. The Rocke feller and Baker financial armies were fighting and winning for them all over the world, as those two old gentlemen, both past 80, played their peaceful game. And these are wonderful dollar armies. They feed themselves, produce little in terest children every year, aNsays obey orders and never lose a bat *!r* J_ X *519 ’21 Douglas Street New Chalk Tint Flannel Frocks Smart! Colorful! .
