May Wheat Rises to Quarter Cent From Level of $2 July and September Crops Inclined to Lag; Trade Broad Most of Day; Rye Hits New High. By CHARLES J LBTPEN, Universal Service Staff tor respondent. Chicago. Jan. 17.—Foreign new* bor dering on the sensational attracted heavy speculative buying of May wheat today Sf’d despite free profit fakltig that deliv ery moved forward, comfrg within V*c of the maglo S3 level. July and September wheat, new crop months, were inclined to Jag. with tha September finishing lower. Wheat closed 2Sc higher to lHc lower, corn was HQHc higher, oats unchanged to V*c higher end rye ruled 1c lower to l\r. higher. Trade in wheat via broad most of the day. A house that has been consistently bullish on May wheat for several months was probably tha best individual buyer. A dominating factor In tha local pit was the pronounced stability of the Winnipeg Riarket. The close there was 6V4<tf7So ichor for the day. The seaboard confirmed export sales of 70O.O00 to 800,000 bushels wheat, fyno ti- aliy all domestic. Liverpool closed u» 3d higher. Buenos Aires opened 3c higher and closed 3%*6#6^o higher. The bulge In wheat uncovered an over sold wheat condition In corn after that frain had dropped sharply during the Irst hour. Prices rallied briskly as fresh support facilitated covering. The demand for better grades of corn was livelier while the off-grades continued neglected. The basis at the close was Irregular, 3c higher to 3c lower. Oats sold off early and then recovered with the other grains. The demand for cash oats whs healthier and the basis Was strong at the last. Rye hit a new high for the May dellv. •ry. July rye lagged. ftxpnrt buying ami increased speculative demand over came all realizing pressure. Provisions dipped early under packer gelling, but came back strong. Lard was 7 1,•_> 'ii T 7 Vsc higher and riba were 2 Sc lower. I*lt Notes. Domestic as well ns foreign news seemed to be In favor of the believer in higher prices today. News from the United Kingdom Indicated that countries in southern Kurope that generally export wheat were seeking grain in I he large surplus countries of the world. Reports from Kansas City advised that some au thorities were of the opinion that because of the recent large sales to mills out of that market that. GO per cent of the stocks must be under contract for future shipment. . , Hungary was credited with buying I.UOO.oou bushels of plate wheat, while Kgvpt and Smyrna were said to have purchased Indian wheat overnight. The fact that Russia, Bulgaria. Roumania. Hungary and other countries that seldom import wheat are competing with the regular Importing nations for their wants, and this c oming after the pro e of wheat has been advanced over cents last summer seems to be striking tim grain trade as a remarkably bullish argument. . , . . Nows from the seaboard has It that * tfiifie Is plenty of our wheat sold ahead ^ for shipment during February and March. Supplies in this country are not of such volume that should clearances Increase •materially during the next few months, thov will not be at the expense of visible stocks. Reserves in farmers' hands must be considerably below last year.. The world's available supply of wheat and flour for the week decreased nearly • 1.000.000 bushels. It totals 230.904.000 bushels, or about 18.000.00o bushels less thau this time last year. In North America visible supplies are less than last year, while farm stocks are also; smaller relatively. _ CHICAGO PRICES. By Updike Grain company.
