Erratic Market in Wheat Result of Profit Taking Close Finds Prices at Very Ir regular Levels; May Wheat Continues Buoy ant; Corn Heavy. Hr C HARLES J. LEYDEN. 1 iiLenta! Service Staff Correspondent. «'hirngn, .Ian. 26.—Free profit-taking In w heat today developed an erratic market, with the cloae finding price* at Irregular levels. May wheat continued buoyant, nod after an early break from a new ciop high In sympathy with the easiness In the deferred months, shot up In the final minutes to fair gains for th# day. Wheat dosed lc higher to lVic lower, corn was l^c to 2%c off. cats unchanged to Pic down and rye ’ unchanged to lc . higher. Foreign markets showed independent strength and checked pressure in the local wheat pit. Winnipeg especially was buoyant, with the May delivery trailing ♦ip to 11.06. and closed Just under th.:i level. Local traders looked for a break lb wheat most of the day. principally be en use of the slump in corn, hut the mar ker looked strong at the close. . The seaboard confirmed export sales of "HO.'JOO bushels of wheat, half of which was Manitoba. England and France bought Duluth No. 1 northsrn. Liverpool closed 2*4d to 2Hd up. Corn was heavy throughout tha day, although rallying from bottom levele with wheat lata; due to short covering. The movement of corn from the farms has been Increasing and poor grades -are ■widening their discounts under the May price. The visible supply for the week increased 3.037.000 bushels. Oats trailed corn lower. Late In the * day covering by shorts rallied prices from the low point. The demand for spot oats Is fairly active, but supplies keep ac cumulating. . Rve was up and down all day and finished c<lh moderate galna. The sea l—rrri reported a moderate demand, with sales finally placed at 40.000 bushels. Provisions sold off moderately. Lard was 5c to 7Vfec lower and ribs wer# 2%c down. Pit NoIm. Thar# has been plenty of bear opinion expressed in the last week or so regard ing the lack of foreign demand for Amer ican wheat. The smaller clearances have been pointed to as a true Indication of the present market situation, but on the break bids are invariably encountered and the atatistical condition of wheat in North America seems probably In a more bullish position than at any time so far. The United States visible supply for the week decreased 2.589.000 bushels, and ia now but 12.000.000 bushels larger than last year, compared with 20.000,000 bush els larger a month ago. The Canadian visible supply for the week showed a mod erate decrease and now totals about 20, 000.000 bushels under last year. There Is 10.000.000 bushels less Canadian wheat In bond in the United States than a year ago. Late advices from Ottawa today placed the exports of Canadian wheat up to the first of January at 110.000.000 bushels, and estimated the farm reserves at 17. nnn.000 bushels Reserves In this country are materially below last year. It is ap parent that there is less wheat In fiest hands In this country and Canada to come forward, while visible supplies are smaller than last year. The supply of wheat, and flour on ocean passage for the week increased 2. 916.000 bushels. In view of the larger world shipments for the week the grain on the oean ia but natural. Consump tion of wheat in Europe is keep ing up on a big scale, and accord ing to late reports from the seaboard, Kngla nd is credited with claiming that! the continent is about cleaned up on floating lots of wheat. UQUc. f Reaction Seen in Stock Market; Oils Are Strong Report of No Change in Steel Dividends Taken Bearishly; Volume Good, but Strength Not Evident. Bjr RICHARD 8P1LT.ANK. Univewnl Service Financial Kdltor. New York, Jan. 26.—It was a decidedly reactionary stock market today. No one gfoup, unless It was the oil*, was con sistently strong, and some of the oils sold off. There hail been hope, but ifot expec tation, that U. 8. Steel would do some thing better In the way of dividend dis bursement. The steel directors meet after the close of the market Tuesday. If re port is true, there will be no change from the present 1 per cent quarterly dis tribution and half per cent extra. This was taken bearishly. The most potent influence on ths mar ket, perhaps, was the temporary with drawal of support by leading operators. Transactions in large lots were excep tionally small, while small or medium size lots were disproportionately big. Jn other words, it might he said that the market wan without one of Its usual main sustaining influences. The volume of business was of good si7.e. but at no time did the market dis play the strength so evident within the last few mon/Lis. Kails, with a few exception*, were low er. Nearly all the steels were down. U. 8. Steel dropping to 126«i. American Woolen continued its depressing course. Nearly all of the industrials were droopy Mer chandisers. sugars, motors, rubbers and specialties went along with the others. Monday has come to lie the day for cleaning in the stock market There was decided irregularity to the gram markets. Wheat was strong early in the session, with rye inclined to fol low the example. Meanwhile corn end oats were heavy. Little was heard of for eign buying. Although closing prices were little changed from tnose of Saturday, there wa nm fair amount of action in the cotton market. The opening was at an advance, but a decline which set in Immediately carried the market down to about 20 points below Saturday's priesa. There \vas a slow recovery which lasted until the close, which was from I up to 6 down for the day. Coffee, 6 to 39 points 'liown. Sugar, steady and little changed.
