Heavy Selling of Wheat Futures Leads to Break • General Rurt of News Bullish but Tales of Manipulated Corner Disturbs Minds of Grain Speculators. % By CHARLES 4. LEYDEN. Universal Service Staff Corre*»p« ndeiit. Chicago,,, Jan. *1.—Heavy Mciling of wheat futureii today, largely b> ea.itern in .“i estf*. developed on the opening bulge *»bd led to a sharp break finally. The Keneral run of news continued of dis tinctly bullish nature, hut the specula tive mind was aompwhat unsettled by I'.css dispatches from the east carrying tales of « manipulated corner in the wheat market. Wheat close l%c to 2c lower, corn Was 2c to 2%c lower, oats were %e to 17Jc down and rye ruled l%c to l%c "New highs on the crop were estab lished In wheat before the setback. Sev eral rallies occurred during ihe day. but fhey failed to hold. Dash imprests and seaboard houses were offering wheat, much of the time, while the support seemed to come from scattered sources. Generally the trade regardd the talk fit a corner in wheat as propaganda, but the pressure attracted was too much for the buying power, except on the declines. The seaboard confirmed export wheat •ales of 700,000 to 800,000 bushels, half ©* which was afloat. Kye Mule* were, ?laced at 50,000 bushels. Liverpool closed %d to l%d higher. Long corn came out freely today. Eastern interests were credited with sell ing much of the corn, while many in the trade regarded the bulk of the sell ing as for the account of local bulls. The offerings of corn from the country were reported light, but the demand locally for the spot was less actige. Oats dropped with corn. Commission ! house liquidation was apparent, and tile buying power was slow in arriving. Rye encountered fait* buying at times, considerable being againfct export busi ness. but the trend was lower with other grains. Provisions were easier. , Lard was 6c to 10c lower and ribs were 12 %e down. Pit Notes. Talk of a coiner in wheat has been heard for weeks. Lending bulls have ad mitted that the nc'.ion of the market reflected that world supply and demand conditions were apparently su< h that a natural corner was existing, but few In the trade *iave believed that the uwirkel hay been a manipulated affair. In fact, there have been emphatic denials to this effect b/ governmental authorities super vising the grain markets. Dr. J. W. T. Duval, local head of the grain futures administration, slates that there is no corner in wheat and that present conditions warrant prevailing price levels. outside wheat markets to day were relatively steady compared with Chicago at the last. Movement of wheat to primary markets was somewhat in excess of last year, but the shipimnts ■were larger than the receipts. Private advices from London skid that Russia was buying Canadian wheat in store at Liverpool In a big way. The continental demand for wheat abroad has been steadily increasing and the Liverpool market last night closed ut the best relationship compared with Chi cago than for several w'eeks. March ■wheat in Liverpool was at a premium of 17c over May wheat in Chicgo. compared with 12c recently. Th® erratic swings In wheat the last week or so hay developed considerable mixed sentiment. The majority are of the belief that world condition?* will finally lead to a higher price level, while there are others who state that the market has gone up too rapidly, has discounted much of the bullish situation and is entitled to some sort of a break. There have been intimations that many of the leading longs have reduced their linen materially, and thpt the new buy ing In the market will not suffice to keep prices advancing. CHICAGO PRICES. Steel Again Feature of Day 9> in Stock Market Transactions Not Large Nor Advance Unusual, hut Manner in Which Stock Acts Significant. By KICHAKIt SPILUNK. I itiversai Service Stuff ('orrei|Minilcnt. New York. Jan. 21.—United Staten Steel wan the feature today of the stock market. When the corporation aide the price at which the stock Is to bo sold to employe's the public accepts the figure as a safe level on which to buy the premier Industrial security. Occasionally the stock sells below the figure tha cor poration announces but as a rule not- for a long time. Therefore. $125 basis was taken as a sound one on which to buy. Transactions In United States Steel were not particularly large n<?r was Its advance of 1 Vi points' considerable ex cept when measured by its huge capitali zation. but it was the manner iA which the stock acted that was significant. News affecting the steel Industry wai fair. In general, the market was dull with the volume of business considerably re duced. Commercial solvents again was a spectacular actor, being up at one time about 16 points for the day In addition to the rvrevious large advance. The oils were steady and acted* ee If they were g^jng to do better. Halle as a rule simply marked time. Shorts fn American sugar had to suffer additional punishment but other sugar stocks did llttl*. Action of the motors was not good Chandler broke badly and was about 3 •points down at one time, but recovered some of the loss. Transactions were on a rood moderate scale. The market aupears to be In a digestive stage. It shows little of the fever or fervor of the last few weeka. Money rates unchanged. Foreign exchahge firm. Despite a good Liverpool start the grains sold off. The wheat pit had to ab sorb heavy selling all forenoon by com mission houses and large cash handlers. Export news was fair. Baltimore people reported selling No. 2 hard wheat to Liverpool and clearing up one exporter of all he had. From the opening of the market the general tendency was to lower lovels. Cotton continued drearily dull. The market awaits the ginning figures. New York Quotations | New York Stofk Exchange quotations furnished by .1. S. Demand for railroad Issues in*i-roved but selling iveaaure was direct 'd against a r.UMbor o1 industrial ana public, utility liens. With informal discussions opened be tween A. J. J'anl. Mexican, minister of finance and Thomas W. I.amont. chair man of the international commutes or bankers on Mexico. .Mexican bonds con tinued to display \ strong tone. « hills the advance rested upon the supposition that debt payments would be resumed. It was mada known that no proposals to; this effect had been outlined and no for mal conferences on the subject sched Growing interest in South American ob ligations was linked with reports of new financing. The most tangible of these concerned negotiations with local bankers for a loan of $0,000,000 or $7,000,000 for the republic of Chile, tlie proceeds or which would be used for railway con struction. It was indicated the operation might be a straight \fhnk loan, involv ing no public offering of bonds. Seaboard Airline bonds led a moderate upturn in railroad issue#.
