Today Fearful and Wonderful. Poor Sacred Monkeys. 5 Continents Picked Up. He Enjoyed Killing. By ARTHUR BRIBANE. (glands, radio and cross-word puz zles occupy this age. A gland fluid, taken from the base of the brain in animals, is to be used as a restora tive for human beings. Dr. H. M. Evans, distinguished scientist, of the University of Cali fornia, who calls his discovery ‘'vitamin X,” has developed an ex tract from the pituitary gland with which animals can be made to grow to gigantic size. H. G. Wells foresaw that in one of his novels, as Jules Verne fore saw other wonders. Science is just beginning to understand that most wonderful of all machines, the liv ing body, “fearfully and wonder fullly made.” Religious men and women in' India are agitated because cold blooded Christians, or their agents, are slaughtering India’s thousands of sacred monkeys, for the sake of their glapds, the latter being trans planted in the bodies of aged, weak human*. The sacred monkeys are vanish ing rapidly, and natives warp the government that the gods—monkey gods, presumably—will have ven geance on India. It is a strange situation. Con sider that the glands of a sacred monkey might become, in an almost i literal sense, the physical father of some human white child, born to a rejuvenated old man. That thought would annoy Bryan, as much as it would surprise Dar win. A radio expert in Paris “picked up” in one day the broadcasting of five different continents. He got Mesopotamia, in Asia, Canada in America, England in Europe, Palmerston, New Zealand, and Oran, in Africa. When the great day comes, and the four angels, as described in the Bible, lift up their voices, at the four corners of the earth, they will be heard by radio listeners on the other side of the world before they are heard by those a quarter of a mile away. That is a miracle. In Budapest Lieutenant Lederer, arrested for murder, confesses that he hanged 15 persons. He adds: “I always put on white gloves for the ceremony, and found my great est pleasure in the hangings.” At that we all shudder, and won der how any monster could actually enjoy hanging his fellow men. And yet, not long ago, English merchants, on their knees outside parliament, begged that there might he fewer sets of gallows in their sipall t9Wn. The king, bishop, lord of the manor, and merchants all had their gallows and separate hangmen. The merchants protest ed that too many men were being hanged. But nobody was willing to give up his gallows, or the right to hang his fellows. Now a fine estate, for sale with gallows and the right to hang men on it, would not attract buyers. Refined families would avoid it. Wall street was not quite so cheer ful yesterday. There was nothing much the matter. But money for gambling went up to 3 Vs per cent, and brokers had to have a reason. Some of them settled on Secre tary Hughes’ resignation. Any ex planation is better than none, al though why Secretary Hughes’ de p%rture should make stocks less val uable, the ordinary lamb does not know. There may be some bad news coming out, something not yet dis counted. Miserable drunkards, fn Atlantic City, complain to the police that their hands were burned by men from whom they bought whisky. To get rid of them and wake them up, after poisonous stuff had made them unconscious, the saloon keepers dropped red-hot coins upon the palms of the sleepers’ hands. If the Injured men could realize what the drink sellers do to their insides, with the bootleg whisky they sell, they would worry less about a burned hand. You can cure that. It is proposed to create an "air ' port” for New York by roofing over the yards of the Pennsylvania rail road. Temporary landing and •ending* j»/aces for fliers might thus be provided in many cities. That -sought to be done. Automobile roads, without grade crossings, could also be easily provided, mak ing a roadway above railroad tracks running out through city suburbs. Railroads should he properly com pensated, of course. Makeshift air ports will soon he Outgrown, however. Before you die, in every big city the week end will see thousands of flying “club cars,” each with its load of pas sengers, flying off to mountains, nr seaside, in summer, to Florida, Cal ifornia, etc., in winter. In 10 years F'lorida will he as near New York City as Atlantic City is now. ironyrlltl'*. > _________-—-1 Insist on having the original porous plaster A Standard External Remedy of Oott 70 Years' Standing Tot Pains in the Back.
