May Wheat Shows Strength at Close: ^ Later Months Lag Indications of Broadening Do mestic Mill Demand Bullish Influence in Pit By CHARLES J. J.EYIIKN. Universal Nervlce Staff Correspondent. Chicago, Jan. 10.—-May wheat mani fested great strength in today's trad ing and moved above the $1.80 level for the second time and closed strong. The deferred months were inclined to lag. Pressure on wheat was lacking and timely support from scattered directions on the dips found the market responsive. Indications of a broadening mill demand In this country, rising premiums for the cash article and a little better export trade were the influences of the day. Wheat closed He lower to l%c high er; corn was He lowefc-to He higher; oats were He to He higher, and rye ruleil He to lHc higher. Volume of trade in any of the pits was nut large. Public interest In wheat Js said to have Simmered considerably, but the market is apparently not in need of public, stimulus, being able to take €•-9re of Itself. It was calendar date for selling wheat today but those who heai kened to the voice from the tomb met with little success. Thu seaboard credited Greece with taking a cargo of No. 2 hard winters for nearby shipment. Italy also bought wheat while the United Kingdom took rye. Lute in the day Norway bought lOO.OOu bushels rye. Trade in com was slow. This grain moved back and forth throughout the session and finished irregularly. The weakness in the off grades of new corn restrained the buying power In the pit. No. 5 grades of corn sold as much as 19o under the May. Old corn was In good demand with the basis firm at the last. Oats moved within a narrow range to fair gains. Commission house support on the dips was consistent but realizing cams out on all flurries. Local and seaboard exporters were fair buyers of rye futures most of the day. The export, demand for this grain re ^ mains fairly active. Provisions met fair Investment buying st times and prices advanced easily. Lard closed 5c to 10c higher and ribs finished 10c higher. B . Pit Notes. . Chicago, Jan. 10.—Domestic news has been the stabilizing influence In the wheat pit the last week, although to day reports of a livelier spot demand in the United Kingdom market encouraged the bulls. Milling trade in all parts of the country Is active and wheat of de sirable quality Is said to be hard to buy. Ited wheat premiums here were up 3c to 6c while No. 2 red at St. Louie sold at $2.02H- At Winnipeg No. 1 northern sold at He over the May, compared with 2c under three days previous. It is a case of underlying strength in the present wheat market that will (U low but temporary dips in the pit. The run of wheat from the farms the last week showed a moderate increase ever the previous week, but terminal stocks in mod*- markets continued to fall. In the east Manltobaa and hard winter wheat is said to b# well In hand and premiums of late have advanced lc '°Indiana mill# In Instances state that they are working at half capacity not because of any slow demand, but rather because of the Inability to get the cash article to grind into flour. Pacific coast mills are said to be paying aiwvfl the export basis for their wants The un settling factor In the market at the moment is the refusal of Liverpool to follow our advances, hut the trade is leas concerned over this fact generally than some time back. World shipments of wheat for the week increased considerably to around 14*000,000 bushels. There has been muen advertising about the impending pressure of southern hemisphere wheat, but to riats it has not apparently impressed foreign markets any. Cash wheat in the United Kingdom still commands »J(*»'» premium over futures end the keepe uo well ell the time. It Is not improbable but that the world need of wheat this season is far n'or® m ^?id? than the average man in the grain trade believes it possllle and ■this may be the beet explanation for the strength that cgj|L grain la showing in all markets. Br BICHABD SFIIXANK. Universal Swvlce Financial Editor. New York. Jan. 10.—Aa Is customary on Saturday, there was a large amount of profit taking In the stock market to day. The manner In which It was taken would seem to Indicate there has been little or no lessening of confidence. In some of the standard issues transaction after transaction was recorded with little change in price. The volume of business was large par ticularly. so for a short session. United Steel was dull and steady throughout the session. Evidently everything that has been said about tho great improvement In tho steel industry has been true. All the rails were active General Motors had the greatest ad vance it has made in years. The merchandisers were strong—Sears Roebuck, Montgomery Ward and Associ ated Dry Goods continuing their climbing. It wag so. too, with various of the food shares, rubbers and oils. Foreign exchange slightly lower. Coffee 10 to 13 points down. Sugar slightly higher. The cotton market waa as calm ag a millpond. Liverpool didn’t act bulllshlv as to tho grains, opening *4 to % higher for wheat, and closing >4 lower, but that did not affect Chicago. Export demand was re ported to be small with the Europeans able to fill their wants at lower prices in other markets than America. ---N New York Quotations | New York Stock Exchange quotations furnlshml by J. 8.
