Brisk Advance in i Wheat and Rve to 1 New High Levels Trade in Wheat Exceptionally Broad; Corn Reactionary Major Part of Day; Oats Close Strong. Bj CHARI.KH J. 1.KYIIKV. Pnitmal Service Staff Correnpondent. I'hicRfo. Dee. 24.—An appreciable re vival In foreign demand for wheat and f> e led to a brink advance to new b'Kh levels for the season today. The fact, that Europe was bidding for surplus grain i he day before Christmas, at a time when holiday dullness generally prevails in the export market, appeared to many in the trade as a significant reflection of Jhe need of supplies abroad. Wheat closed 2%$$3%c higher, corn was kOHc advanced, oats were up • ntl rya ruled 4**®5c advanced. Trade in wheal was exceptionally broad. Commission houses were persistent buyers in the. late trading, while earlier some of the local operators were credited with supporting. Covering by shorts helped to lift the market into new ground finally. December wheat was relatively strong compared with the later months. The seaboard confirmed export sales of 250,000 bushels of wheat and 400,000 bushels of rye. Liverpool futures closed 3 *4 pence higher. Corn displayed a reactionary tendency the major part of the day. A prominent house that was outspokenly bearish or corn was among the best sellers. Com mission houses and a prominent local operator were among the best buyers. The I close was fra tlonally higher. In sympathy i with the leading grain. Outside Interest * In corn was light CommlMShm house realising held oats down during the early trade, but grad ually a better class of buying entered the pit. and at the dose the market looked si rung. Excellent buying of rye futures, largely by seaboard inlet eats, found pressure mod erate anti prices boomed. Norway took a cargo of rye for February shipment, while Germany was also in the market. Provisions sold off early and then firmed to an irregular close. Lard was 2',*c higher to 5c and ribs were 12^*4/' 27**c higher. VIt Notes. * During the last few days the market r has been tailed upon to absorb heavy profit taking sales, and the fact that it has and closed last night near the best levels of the season, speaks volumes for the market's absorptive ability. Jt had been rumored at times that some of tha leading bulls were selling futures, bur gradually these rumors were discred ited. The tenrfr of foreign news was quite bullish. The strength in Liverpool today came rather as a surprise. A foreign statistician claims that, stocks of wheat In Italy, Spein and Belgium are liberal, but light in Germany and France. The latter countries are heavy consumers of bread grains, and with stocks light at this sea son of the year, following such enormous clearances from North America, it looks as though native crops In Europe may have been overestimated. Weather conditions in the Argentine were reported favorable and the harvest has made good progress. Broomhall ad vised that yields were coming above ex pectations in that country, with the ex ception of the south. Just what tho Ar gentine surplus will be, however, is still problematical. It is safe to say that yields will he smaller than a year ago. The world’s available supply of wheat1 ami flour for the week decreased 4,132,-1 ouo bushels. It totals 246.270,000 bush-I ele, compared with 262,632,000 bushels ji 1 year ago. When one considers the fuel that the world's available supply is under that of a year ago the large visible in i hi* country begins t<» diminish before the eve Farmers in tiiis country are sold »i«ut on their wheat crop and the changes In i lie I'm ted Slates visible from now oil cannot be other than downward.
